This review is long overdue as Colin and Janine went out of their way to make the first week of our honeymoon something we will enjoy recalling forever. Below is a far too detailed personal account of why KoroSun Dive is, in my opinion, the only operator to go with in SavuSavu. If you want access to the best dive sites in the area, with people who truly care about your safety and experience underwater look no further.
The long version:
We had contacted KoroSun before our trip to give them a heads up for our arrival. Unfortunately, when we first arrived, the weather was not cooperating and their boat had a temporary mechanical issue that prevented them from making the journey out to the Namena Reserve. Instead of trying to sell us on what they could access they suggested another dive operator that could get us out there. From everything I had read, Namena Reserve was not to be missed.
The next day, we went with the "other operator" to Namena and unfortunately the DM opted for a terrible dive plan. Our first dive in over a year, and we were swimming against a heavy current 80+ ft down with mediocre visibility. Adding insult to injury my wife, who is a DM herself with 500+ dives, had major equipment issues involving a rental regulator (not from KoroSun) that quit delivering air 90 feet down, and her own dated dive computer crapping out during the dive. Needless to say our dive was cut short and we shared air and surfaced prematurely. Even after decades of experience she was rattled enough to opt out of the second dive that day. Not a good start to a three week dive-centric honeymoon.
With the weather still in flux and my new wife temporarily terrified of her favorite activity we took a couple days off. During our down time, we ran into Colin and Janine and recounted our unfortunate experience. They felt awful and unnecessarily responsible having suggested the "other operator". Once the weather turned around we dove with KoroSun. Colin and Janine did everything they could to ensure we had a positive experience. It was obvious Colin has been diving here for years and knows every inch of the reef. The dive plans were well thought out and the sites were nothing short of incredible. Janine devoted herself to being right next to my wife as she was still rattled after her glimpse into mortality. Their attention and proficiency underwater helped my wife get back to her normal diving demeanor in a couple days and allowed us to truly enjoy diving for the rest of the trip.
If the superior diving experience hadn't already sold us, then the quality post-dive hang outs would've. Post dive days involved shared meals and beverages at the Planters Club. I think it is safe to say in all of our extensive travels Colin and J9 have to be some of our favorite people we have met. Colin is a born comic and can't resist a questionable joke after a couple cold ones... we still chuckle over the punch lines to some of the solid ones. On land Janine was a great partner in crime, as none of us would want the fun times to end.
Their generosity and sincerity is second to none. When we left to our next destination they offered a dive computer of theirs, free of charge, for the remainder of our trip only asking that we mail it back to them before leaving Fiji. It was this kind of over-the-top kindness that makes me feel like my ringing endorsement will still fall short of the praise they deserve. They are living their version of the ex-pat dream, and the openness with which they shared that with us is something we will cherish forever.
"No-eyed deer" why anyone would go with another dive operation. We can't wait to get back.
