The park covers a large portion of the Eastern side of Taveuni Island. It contains many tourist attractions including Tavoro Falls, Lavena Coastal Walk, Waitabu Marine Park and Daveoux Peak. It is a magnificent area and in my opinion a MUST for all visitors to Taveuni.
We found the best way to get there was by Taxi but you can also catch the local bus.
Taxi's are about FJ$80 to FJ$100 return from Matei (where the Taveuni Airport is located) and for this price the driver will wait a few hours for you. The first part of the road is sealed, but most isn't. It takes about 40 minutes to get there. Visiting by taxi is reassuring on the safety side of things as if you have an accident it is such a remote area that you could otherwise be in strife. The bus on the other hand is cheap but VERY unreliable. We were told it could run early, but was usually quite late and rarely on time. We tried to take the 9.30am Matei bus, so we arrived early (at 9.10am), waited until 10am, then decided to call a taxi. What a surprise to see the bus already at Bouma when we arrived!
It would be impossible to see all tourist areas of the park in one day. Allow half a day for each of the main attractions, and only try to combine hikes like the Lavena Coastal walk then past Tovoro Falls to the other falls in one day IF YOU ARE VERY FIT. Otherwise hike for half the day, then enjoy things like diving, fishing, snorkeling, dining etc and return to Bouma another time for the other hikes. It would have to be one of the best places to hike so take your time to enjoy.
