“Outstanding Little Oasis With The Warmest Heart”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2012

My husband and I are currently at Makaira Resort in the Marlin Bure - we have been here for 5 days and it has been the best vacation we've ever had This place is so relaxing it is like a balm to the soul. Firstly the view from our bure - looking out over a beautiful garden with the ocean below. You can hear the ocean clearly but without the exposure and traffic from boats, beach-goers, etc.. you'd get from being right on the beach. Secondly, for self-caterers, this place is a dream. We have a great little kitchen where we have been cooking our meals. Food is super fresh and easy to get from one of the little towns and the staff are super friendly and obliging for requests for freshly opened young coconuts, greens from the garden and the best papayas you'll ever eat. But if you would rather not cook, the food is delicious and made with love. People treat you like you're family here, not just a guest but you also are given plenty of privacy. The perfect balance of hospitality and creating space for a great vacation.
And lastly the people. Roberta is one of the warmest and most charming hostesses we've come across on our travels. The email exchanges we had before coming were very informative. Right on the first day, she drove us into the little town and showed us the best vendors for fruits, veges and basic groceries. She really took the time to show us around. Not only that but she is an outstanding snorkel guide. I am 5 months pregnant and not very confident in the water but Roberta really took care of my husband and I, making sure we had the right fins and other snorkeling gear. We navigated the reefs around Makaira with Roberta's loving and alert eye, and she made sure we were with her each step.
Special mention to her staff - Kirsti, Roberta's right hand lady who is utterly warm and gracious and to Baba, the manager with the infectious giggle and sweet demeanor. The staff are largely one extended family literally, and the love they share really permeates the atmosphere of this place. They are not just 'staff' and that really what makes this place very special - a true 'cut above' the other resorts where you get the feeling the staff are just employees.

Without repeating all the accolades in the previously posted reviews, I just want to say-it's all true! This is one of the friendliest and most beautiful places I have ever stayed and our 4 nights there were not enough. Roberta, Kristi and her family treated us like very special friends and spoiled us rotten with lovely meals and treats. Kristi and Lucy accompanied my daughter and I on the Lavena Coastal Walk (and saved me from slipping on wet rocks more than once!) They are always smiling and laughing and so pleasant to be around. The extended family invited us to a singalong one night and we had fun taking pictures of the children dancing-we felt like we were part of the family. Roberta is a terrific snorkel guide and is fun and interesting to talk to. The grounds and bures are quite luxurious.

By far no exceptions the best place to stay on Taveuni. Hey read the other reports. If you can't enjoy yourself at Makaira check your pulse I think you are dead. Loads of thanks to Roberta for the hospitalitiy, Capt. John for the fishing and the food, Bubba for the laughs and the rest of the staff for cleaning up after us.

We caught Yellowfin Tuna up to 50kg, ate too much fantastic food and put on weight, got a sun tan and had a heap of laughs what more could you ask for from a tropical holiday.

Although we only spent 3 nights of our honeymoon at Makaira, we wished we had spent more time here! Roberta, John, Baba, Christy, Pete, Sau, and the rest of the staff were fantastic! John is an excellent chef- the dinner he made was the best meal we ate on the entire honeymoon! Roberta was recovering from a cold so we didn't see her till our last day, but she was a very gracious hostess and provided wonderful information before we arrived. Her packing list was very helpful, as was the information she provided in the bure! Baba's breakfasts were fantastic as well! We also went snorkeling with Baba and Pete a couple times. Pete is an excellent guide- we saw amazing fish, coral, anemones, sea cucumbers etc. The snorkeling off honeymooners island and brooks balmy were both outstanding. Makaira has a "dipping pool" about 4 feet by 4 feet so definitely just for dipping, but we enjoyed lounging by it and looking out at the ocean. We loved Makaira and would love to go back sometime!

Room Tip: There are only two bures- we stayed in the smaller one and thought it was great!

Bula!

Traveling from California, it took us quite a while to get to the Island of Taveuni, but what a welcome we received upon our arrival! With a huge smile, Bubba, a staff member at Makaira, picked us up from the Taveuni airport and gave us a tour of the area before taking us to Makaira Resort, our new home for the next 10 days. The staff sang a song for us upon our arrival which was so nice. The next 10 days went by too fast! the view from our Bure (we stayed in the Grander Bure) was breathtaking and wonderful to wake up to every morning.

The island of taveuni is pretty small and does not have many amenities...Matei has a few restaurants in the area, but Chef John makes the best dinners by far, this is the little cottage overlooking the ocean where you are personally catered to for breakfast and dinner, as long as you let them know ahead of time. We did venture to Tavu Tavu restaurant on Friday nights for local buffet dinner which was amazing and I highly recommend it. We also had a curry dinner personally prepared by Bubba's Indian Mamma and another dinner prepared by the Makaira Fijian Staff another night.

However, other than that there aren't many restaurants in the area where the food is worth the money. We mostly ate at Makaira Cafe or prepared our own meals from the kitchenette on our balcony, it can get a bit pricey eating at the cafe every night, but the food DOES NOT dissapoint, Chef John is an amzing cook and Bubba make a GREAT breakfast. They will create a menu that reflects your personal tastes and preferences.

Our activities during our stay included hiking to waterfalls, snorking with Roberta, Petay and Babba (some of the best snorklling i've ever seen is right down the hill in front of Makaira), trying out the local transportation (the bus which may or may not be on "Fiji Time" at any point but is fun for an adventure and is a MUCH cheaper option than taxis), Day trip to Lavena Coastal Walk (make sure to get a guide for $15 Fijian), Ocean Fishing with Captain John (so much fun!), receiving AMAZING massages by Sou (which run about $50 Fijian per hour - about $35 USD) - I got two!, and all around relaxing and napping on the hammocks on our Bure. This is a GREAT spot if you just want to relax and de-stress, but why else would you go to Fiji? I cannot say enough good things about the staff at Makaira, we felt over and over again that everyone at Makaria would go out of their way to ensure we were enjoying our stay, we were very sad to leave such amazing people.

Overall, I would definitey recommend this resort to couples looking to get away and de-stress... the view is amazing and the staff is incredible. Vinaka.

We spent a week of our honeymoon at Makaira and within a day wished we had spent the other week too. We stayed in the smaller of the two bures, which was beautifully furnished and very comfortable, the lovely balcony, gardens and ocean views meant that it was very easy to just while away the days doing nothing much at all. The owners and staff at Makaira were very warm and friendly people and made the stay extra special, always willing to help make our stay the best possible experience. The owners are conservation minded, especially when it comes to the sea, whether related to the fishing activities they run or just their surrounding coastal environs - Roberta will gladly show you her fabuloius work in coral gardening she does in front of the hotel. The feasting at Makaira's is also to be recommended.
In summary the best way to describe the experience at Makaira is having the feeling not that you have gone away somewhere but that you have arrived home

Just got back from Makaira Resort, and what a fantastic time we had with John, Roberta, and their extended family (aka staff). This was probably the best vacation that we have ever taken, but wish we could have spent a few more days there. John is both an incredible fishing guide and chef. If you hook it, he will definitely cook it into an incredible meal. If you are looking for relaxing and having the geninue Fiji experience, then Makaira is hard to beat for the money. We will definitely be back, and in my opinion was worth the long flight. Also, don't be afraid to go Giant Trevally fishing, this was my first time, but with some good coaching and encouragement from John and Baba, we were catching these aggressive fighting monsters in no time.
