Just stayed at the Sofitel between 15th and 22nd Jan having booked with Thomson/First Choice. We were not disappointed. The initial reception upon evening arrival was a excellent with soft drinks provided whilst waiting to check in which was done rather speedily. The room was very spacious with a massive double bed - maybe 7' wide. Enough to sleep with my wife and feel as if we were in singles! We had a sea view although limited as we were on a lower floor. The hotel complex is large but well designed and very spacious. The main dining room had both indoor and outdoor areas (with fine netting to keep the birds away) which was great. We dined outside for breakfast and sometimes lunch and indoors for evening dinner. The quality and selection of the food was excellent with different themed dishes every night. A good choice of hot courses and also a really good selection of cold dishes, salads etc. which included various recipes which varied daily. We also had the option of dining for one night in the a la carte restaurant as part of the AI deal too. As you might expect from a Sofitel the chefs are mostly French speaking and prepared the food very well indeed. So much so i put on half a stone in weight in one week because i just had to sample so much. Bon apetit. The AI package drinks are local but the spirits are drinkable especially the Gin. The wine might not be to the palate of a connoisseur but again is drinkable. Better quality wines are available to purchase but are a bit pricy though. There are also a range of cocktails included in the package together with soft drinks.
We didn't get involved with the animation team and their various daytime activities but they didn't 'get in your face' as at other resorts. My wife chose to sunbathe as much as possible on one of the many loungers around the pool areas or on the beach where windbreaks are also provided. I snorkelled every day and experienced the usual underwater delights that the Red Sea has to offer. There is a diving jetty opposite the hotel although, as the management will tell you at the welcome meeting, the best snorkelling is to be had off the jetty opposite the neighbouring Hyatt hotel where the coral is better and the water deeper. Awesome. Only one of the main pools is heated but it is 'propertly heated' and almost warm. The others are colder but okay once you are in.
The only downside I felt was the quality of the evening entertainment which is provided by the entertainment team. There was some good belly dancing and dervish spinning but the rest was all a bit 'Butlinsish' ( Karaoke, Dance competition etc) It would have been nice to have seen some music acts but I suppose with taba Heights being away from the busy areas of Sharm etc. it might be difficult to get them and it was the low season aswell. So some nights we just played cards, chatted and had a few drinks which was very pleasant and relaxing.
The staff are all very welcoming, polite and helpful without being too attentive. It is clear to see that the senior staff and managers are ever present and ensuring that things run smoothly and without problem. We were asked to complete a guest satisfaction questionnaire one day and include any feedback. I mentioned that i thought small milk cartons would be preferable in the bedrooms to the sachet cream and also suggested an extra sheet on the bed as an alternative to the fairly heavy duvet. Later that day they brought a full carton of milk to the room and 2 extra sheets! Now that is service.
All in all this was one of the best holidays I have had for some time and provided Thomson keep the Manchester flights going I will probably return ( which is unlike me - somewhere different every time ) The value for money was simply outstanding and I am already recommending it to family and friends. So thankyou Mr Edouard and all your staff ( Heba, Shimaa, Rashed, the Chefs et al...) Merci tes beaucoup :-)))
