“Sharm sea without naama bay business”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2010

We spent a diving week in shark's bay. We wanted to see the reefs around Sharm but without the crowd and the "busy business" of naama bay, so we decided to go to sharks bay and it was a good choice.
The location is very good for a relaxing holiday: the beach is busy (but not too much) during the day, but in the evening there are very few people and all the restaurants and beduin cafes are quiet. On the beach you'll find 5 shops 3 restaurants 2 beduin cafe', 2 bar and 2 markets; they are all open until 10:00 pm and the atmosphere is relaxing (people is not pushing you in the shops like in naama bay).
The location is good for diving too: the jetty is owned by umbi, their boat is already there when you arrive and you don't have to wait for the boat on the jetty. The reef close to Tirana island are very close and nearly as good as ras mohamed! In case of strong wind you can dive in the house reef which is not bad at all. The rooms are clean and silent, and the staff is friendly. If you want a more "wild" place on the red sea you'll have to go to Marsa Alam, but then, (apart from elphistone), you'll not find reefs as nice as Ras Mohamed and Jakson reef.

We loved this hotel! It was right on the beach and just lovely. We made all our reservations and arrangements before we left and were very pleased that they kept in communication with us. We made most of the arrangements for our tours this way so that we could guarantee that we could go on the tours we wanted. As we neared our arrival to Egypt there was a problem with a Petra tour that we wanted to go on but they managed to find another Petra tour for us by the time we arrived. They also e-mailed us a map of the area showing how to reach the hotel in case we had troubles with local cab drivers. This turned out to be very useful. When we arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh the cab driver was trying to take us to the Sheraton Hotel on Shark's Bay which is quite a distance away from Sharks Bay Umbi Diving Village. The driver didn't understand English very well but once we showed him the map he was able to take us to the correct place.

We had a Bedouin Village room and it was very nice. Our only complaint was that the food wasn't the best. Still, we had an overall great experience.

If you love diving, stop searching for a Sharm hotel and stay here. My husband and I are both PADI certified, so quality of diving facilities was one of the top reasons we choose to spend 1 week here. It was the right choice. The dive shop is excellent, with professional and very friendly staff ready to make it a trip to remember. Our spacious room overlooked the beach. Snorkeling is literally right under your nose as you only need to walk to the end of the jetty to see colorful coral and small fish life. Dive shop arranged 2 boats, all were well done and very convenient (by boat 20 min or 2 hours - thats peanuts compared to other places we've dived. very easy at Shark's Bay). After 3 dives in 1 day, you want to be able to get to your room quickly and easily.
To ensure this is a balanced review, I would say the potential drawback to staying here and not in Na'ama Bay is that the location to other sites in Sharm. (Again, if beach is your #1, then this is perfect). There aren't mini buses, so taking a taxi is essentially the only way you can leave the hotel grounds. Cost is approx 50 ep or 10USD 1 way. GIven that in Cairo you can take a taxi for 30 minutes and only need to pay 4 USD, the price hike was a shock. That means a little more work, but again, its all relative. You can reach Na'ama within 10 minutes and afterall, its only 10 dollars.
Cute point about the rooms. Our cleaning people had a sense of humor - it just gives you a taste for the warmth of the hotel staff. When preparing our bed, they molded different shapes out of the bedsheet. 1st day it was 2 swans. Next day was hearts. So cute! Staff was as pleasant as you could hope, and always ready for a laugh.
Overall, excellent room with view of the sea from bed and from private balcony. Snorkeling and diving were very convenient and it almost wasn't fair that it was so easy to access such beauty. Yes, will be coming back!

We spent a week in Umbi, at the beach cabins of the Bedouin Village. The standard is very good, the rooms are clean, with AC, TV and fridge. We booked half board and did not regret it, however the breakfast was the same every day, this got boring after the 3rd morning. Although the accomodations are near the airport, you don't hear the airplanes starting and landing. Actiually, it is perfectly peaceful place, save for the noise of the compressors for pressed air, but it is not too loud, just a low distant buzzing. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
The beach is a public one, but absolutely tranquil and not too full of people. There are some good restaurants on the beach, so you don't have to walk far to get a good meal, and with good prices too.

Best thing ever about Umbi: the house riff and Sunshine Diving Base!!! We found it marvellous to dive with them. Their staff is very well trained and careful. They never let you out of their sight when diving and do not make you do things you are afraid of.
The house riff is a real jewel and only a cat's leap away from the Umbi Bedouin Village. Even if you don't dive, snorkelling will amaze you.

we (myself boyfriend and two friends) chose this hotel mainly because of the diving. We arrived at 6am and was shown straight away to our rooms which had a lovely balcony overlooking the sea. Umbi Village is not your 5 star resorts you find in Nama bay but who wants that anyway!! No hassles here. The dive shop was great Alex who managed the shop and our dive guides Mousa, Noor and Valleria were good fun. The major plus point of staying here was it had its own jetty so you avoided the haords found in nama bay-no long transfers just a few minutes stroll along to the boat from the hotel. If you are not diving then you need to be up early to bag a sun lounger as it is invaded by russians who literally get off the bus and run to the beach!!!

restaurants were okay -always have the option of going to nama bay for a change (we only did this once) beware though you cant avoid the egyptian belly wherever you go!!

My partner and I stayed elsewhere but booked on the open water 3 day training course at Sharks Bay. Mona our instructor was very chilled out, the underwater scenery is amazing and I really enjoyed it. My partner couldn't handle some of the training and pulled out after the first day and they only charged her for a days dive rather than the full course which they were entitled to do. The shuttle bus from our hotel was very reliable and the village also offers decent food at the beach bar.
