We visited the Red Sea Holiday Village after reading positive reviews on TripAdvisor and booking 9 months in advance.
Overall we had an enjoyable holiday. We're not really the types to moan over minor issues and will make the best out of something bad. Overall we enjoyed our holiday as the kids enjoyed it, it was relaxing and pretty easy going and we just made the best out of the annoying situations.
On arrival which is around 10pm at night we were taken to our room to find it had only been set up for a couple. Confusion then ensued with us not being sure if we were in the right room, the kids were tired and hungry and it took a while to get sorted which left me having to text the First Choice helpline to get resolved (at a cost to me). Finally some beds were brought up and we were able to get sorted.
The room however was very spacious and cleaned well.
We were in block 9 which was above the swim up rooms and near the quiet pool. To get to the main pool / kids club activities area you had to walk a little distance but not more than 5 minutes in total. Our block was also near the restaurant so easy enough to get to for breakfast then head down to the pool.
Overall the food was quite nice with various themed nights on throughout the week, the only downside was having a massive insect appear in my mushrooms a few days before we were due to depart. We also tried the themed restaurants. All were very nice although I felt the Indian lacked atmosphere (the only atmosphere we had was some family allowing their kids to watch an ipad at full volume!).
We did however visit the Indian on my birthday and were well looked after, at the end of the meal a cake was delivered and the whole restaurant sang happy birthday (this was our second visit and much more enjoyable then the first!
The American restaurant is lovely, but I don't understand why you only get one visit if you are there for two weeks as it was fairly quiet.
The were various pool options - the main, an activity and kids splash pool. As we have a 7 and a 2 year old we opted to be in the middle of all 3. The activity pool was the cleanest out of all although during our stay the main and the kids pool got closed down approximately 7 times due to faeces in the pool (swim nappies aren't that expensive and you can actually buy reusable ones with liners if you have issues with space in your suitcase! Although there were rumours that older kids were doing this and having it filmed to go up on YouTube).
The pool area could benefit from some renovation as flooring is coming away which makes it difficult to walk along. Also if you are going with kids invest in some of the water shoes that you can get from the likes of Sports Direct for a few pounds - they really are worth it as the floor gets so hot.
We used both the crèche and the kids clubs.
Our 2 year old visited the crèche on a daily basis for a 2 hour session which it was at it's hottest and loved every minute of it. She had also recently just been potty trained so the staff were great with her. Sophie in particular was our youngest ones favourite!
Our eldest also did various activities with the Super Stars which she enjoyed but did opt to spend most of her time in the pool. Her favourite kids club rep was Eddie (the Teddy?!). However, all the kids club staff were absolutely fantastic.
The night entertainment, even though the staff were lovely, just seemed to be lacking something compared to a different holiday village we have visited in the past. I'm not sure if this change applies to all Holiday Villages but if so you need to go back to what you were doing best.
4 days in I got the dreaded Egypt belly which was strange considering I had been following the advice given such as to avoid ice, drink plenty of fluids (I rarely drank alcohol because they make it far too strong) hand washing and using the gel sanistisers available. It's taken almost 2 months to get back to normal on this front! The kids also got it but thankfully not as bad as myself. Husband was absolutely fine.
Overall the resort was kept clean - the staff worked unbelievably long hours. However, holiday makers do really need to think about their own behaviour and cleanliness and can't just blame everything on the resort. If your child defecates in the pool that is your responsibility. Consider others and don't be swearing, getting drunk and blaring music at the side of the pool. We actually saw one mother that drunk that she actually dropped her young child on the floor, the proceeded to carry her to her sun lounger whilst walking (swaying) along the edge of the pool. How she didn't fall in is beyond me, although she did effectively through the child into another family members arms as she collapsed onto the sun lounger! And yes, it was reported by a number of guests.
Overall we did have a lovely time, the holiday was very good value for money (almost 2k cheaper than Europe). The staff were friendly, welcoming and made us at ease. I just feel a little more could have been done on the entertainment front and the issue of defecating in the pool.
The day we were leaving the staff that our children were closest too came to wave them off, with one of them in tears which made me very sad to see, but it was good that our children had such a great time.
I don't think I would go back again and would probably opt to try another holiday village.
Also for anyone travelling and worried about the current issues in Egypt - honestly, we were there whilst it was really kicking off and had no problems at all. There was one night where there was a 7pm curfew so you had to stay in the hotel, however we were fine with this and didn't venture out of the hotel during our stay.
Be careful if you opt for a swim up room, we noticed that most of these didn't get sun from mid...
