Things started off ok, help getting bags off the coach, quick check-in and taken to our room with our luggage carried for us. The room while a little tired and in need of some redecoration seemed clean. The porter checked the fridge to find it hadn’t been stocked, and a couple of minutes later a man arrived with two bottles of water and Coke. From here though things mainly went down hill.
Our first night in the main buffet restaurant we struggled to find a table. The hotel didn’t even seem full, but the dining area is far too small for a hotel this size, there were times people had to wait outside the restaurant for a table to become available. This problem is compounded by the fact that most people seem to go for their meals towards the start of service. We discovered why when we though we would have a quiet, late lunch one day only to find very little salad left, many of the main dishes down to the last few helpings and most of the deserts gone.
Even if you got there early enough for there still to be a full range of food available it was nothing to shout about. The salad was the same every day, often looking like it might have even been the same salad that was served the previous day. For the main meal there was very limited choice 10-12 dishes, this includes things such as rice, potato and vegetables normally leaving a chicken, fish and beef dish. There is a show cooking area, these produce the same pasta and pizzas meal after meal and the novelty soon wears off. While not a problem for us, the food is definitely more for guests from other parts of Europe, particularly Russia (mash potato and salad for breakfast?), and people who are fussy eaters or have young children may not find it to their liking. Service in the restaurant is poor, tables are not cleared and re-laid quickly enough, getting a second drink can prove frustrating, one lunch time we were never offered a drink at all. Add to this an abundance of flies and you can see why we only ate here for lunch and two evenings we were there.
Service on the whole at the hotel is poor. Bar staff are often more interested in talking amongst themselves than serving guests, restaurant staff I have already mentioned while I am not sure what house keeping actually do. Our room was never “cleaned” (and I use the term loosely) before 4pm the whole time we were there, and all that seemed to be done was a change of towels and the bed made. The lack of cleaning taking place was obvious from the dirt on the floor and shower gel marks left day after day in the bath. A similar lack of cleanliness could be found throughout the hotel, you could see the suncream in the swimming pool and dining tables weren’t cleaned only cleared between guests.
Having said all that there are some good aspects to the hotel. The themed restaurants you have to pay extra for provide a level of service you would expect in a 4-star hotel, plus the food is much fresher, hotter and superior all-round the main restaurant. I would particularly recommend the Asian restaurant, the mixed Indian food there is some of the best I have ever had, and the service exceptional.
The pool area is spacious and we never had a problem finding a lounger. There is also plenty of shade if it gets a bit too hot in the sun. Like wise the beach area is more spacious than the hotels photos make it appear and you must go snorkelling here. Having a coral reef on site and being able to swim among such a range of fish was amazing. I would recommend getting a cheap waterproof camera too in as it is great for photos.
Finally, if you travel with Thomson you will get two bottles of water in your room fridge each day. This is the only free bottled water you will get. You can get them refilled at the bars from a water cooler, but if you want bottled water you will have to pay. That’s right on an inclusive package you have to pay for water.
Never a 4-star hotel, 3 at best and that is based on the facilities rather than the quality of what is on offer.
