Stayed for 16 days mid November to beginning December. Chose this hotel after reading the reviews on this site. Time to return the favour. We were two adult couples travelling together.
Airport-
Visas bought on arrival range from $15 to 15 pounds sterling depending on qhich queue you join. Dont be harrassed by people trying to herd you into the most expensive queue. They are NOT officials, they are trying to extract money from you!
We were stung for the taxi fare to the main hotel. I couldnt remember what I'd read about the cost, so we paid what we were quoted- 25 pounds sterling! The true cost of the taxi journey is around 7 pounds sterling, BARTER before getting into a taxi. The hotel is only 15 minutes or so from the airport.
Main Hotel-
We'd booked the beach bungalows but were offered a free upgrade to the hotel on arrival. Was told that if we didnt upgrade that night, we'd have to pay for an upgrade if we decided at a later date that we wanted to change. We declined.
Spent one day at the main hotel during our stay, and ate there a couple of times in the evening. There was always plenty of room around the pool, no germans maurading with towels on sunbeds at 6 in the morning here! The animation team do try and get you to join in the activities but leave you alone if you tell them to.
Lots of things have been said about the food, but we found it fine, (see separate comments about the beach bungalow restaurant). Food is typical A.I. buffet style, and plenty of it -We also stayed in a hotel in Cairo for a couple of days and the food there was truely awful!. The main bar tends to be very busy and there were long queues for drinks. We tried two of the non A.I. restautants at the hotel, Chez Pascal and Saddle Bar. Both were good value for money and the food was very good, better than the A.I. buffet.
Beach bungalows-
A courtesy bus is laid on to take you to the bungalows, which are miles away from the main hotel. We'd booked the bungalows for 2 reasons; the snorkelling, and the quiet. We weren't disappointed.
The accomodation is a little basic but very clean and well maintained. We took a portable DVD player with us which was a good decision because there is only 1 (non news) English channel on the t.v. We booked a double bed but were given twin beds, the staff will change for you if you're not happy.
The staff at the bungalows work extremely hard and are courteous and friendly. The small beach has plenty of beds available, and doesnt get too busy. There is a small jetty which reaches to the edge of the reef. The water depth is about 20 feet so not good for non confident swimmers or small children.
I needed plenty of conditioner because the water is very salty and harsh on the hair. People are continually trying to sell you a massage, they are always polite though and go away eventually if you are firm.
The bar at night is very quiet, most people go out to the main hotel or to Naama bay. Take some cd's with you for the staff to play or you will be listening to Celine Dion and Sarah Brightman all night every night. Nothing wrong with the drinks. Take some insect repellent as the mozzies come out at night.
Food at the beach bingalows-
Breakfast is okay, you need to ask for eggs or omelettes. Lunch is passable and the pizzas are fine. As a previous posting mentions: DO NOT EAT AT THE BUNGALOWS FOR DINNER! The food at night is appalling, only 2 choices per course and even then you wont get what is on the menu, and it will be cold and tasteless. Dont be shy in sending it back, the staff are used to it. The one exception is the 'barbeque on the beach' night, which is more like the food you get at the main hotel.
You'll understand why the restaurant at the beach is empty most nights; you've been warned.
Naama Bay-
Nowhere near as bad as expected (I've been to Tenerife and that is far worse for being hassled). Most people trying to get you into their shop or restaurant do so with wit and humour and if you treat them the same they will soon leave you alone. We ate out at several places, worth a mention are the Hard Rock cafe, and Camel Bar (also a great place to watch the football). By far the best place to eat was the restaurant attached to the Lido Hotel. The restaurant is on a deck outside the hotel, with tables overlooking the bay, so you can watch the fish as you are eating. The food was excellent, about 100 pounds sterling for 4, would be more expensive in U.K.
I must also mention The Cataract Travel Int shop opposite the Camel Bar becasue the guy in here was so helpful. The trips to Cairo etc from the hotel are reasonable, but far more expensive than if you go to Naama Bay and book yourself. We wanted to stay in Cairo for 2 days which none of the shops do, but in this shop the guy gave us advice, wrote down directions to the bus garage and 'Egyptair' for us so that we could arrange everything ourselves. he wouldnt take a tip and said he was just pleased to help- what a breath of freshair!
Cairo-
A quick note on Cairo. We decided to get an overnight bus to Cairo and fly back- should have flown both ways. Bus ticket cost 8 pounds sterling, flight one way cost 30 pounds sterling. The overnight bus was an experience, constant videos and music playing all night, having to get off the bus for road blocks and luggage search, and arriving in Cairo at 5 in the morning! If you want to do this, I'd advise you to go directly to Egyptair in Sharm old town and book direct. The main Kiroseiz hotel has web access which we used to book our hotel in Cairo.
All in all a great holiday, would recommend the resort and would definitely recommend the beach bungalows, although if you have children this is not the place for you. As for the main hotel, if you are staying here do not expect to be near the beach, you are miles away.
