“Not a place for those those who don't value value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

We stayed at the Royal Grand Sharm in Sharm El Sheikh between December 19-29th 2013. The Hotel is large, and occupies a good location on the coast in well maintained landscaped gardens. The staff are polite, very friendly and accommodating but don’t expect to be able to compare this hotel to usual 5 star hotels in other locations, its not bling but comfortable and well worn; but The Royal Grand Sharm represent great value.

We stayed on an all inclusive basis with all food and drink included. We stayed on the second floor in a deluxe sea room view which had a large balcony overlooking the main swimming pool and sea beyond. The weather was beautiful during the day with temperatures around 25-27 degrees and to get the most out of the trip be prepared to get up early and find a suitable spot around the pool or on the beach and start sunbathing at 8am. In December the sun dips around 4pm so get your tanning hours in early (it does get colder in the evenings so take a jumper).

If your thinking of staying in Sharm El Sheikh the main choices to make when selecting if you want to stay at the Royal Grand Sharm are; do you want to stay in a quieter location away from the night life and shopping of Soho Square but be away from the airport and closer to the diving? We visited Narma bay to check out some of the other more central hotels that occupy that strip and were delighted with our choice of hotel.

Summarised below are some of the activities we enjoyed during our stay;

- Exploring the Desert – organised by the Hotel this half day trip involved a mini bus drive to a desert compound and then getting suitably attired in Arab headscarf before driving either two seater buggies or quad bikes into the desert and enjoying see some great scenery and having some fast bumpy driving along the way. Be aware that the afternoon is very very dusty, wear old cloths as the dust get everywhere and you could even take ski goggles to cut out the dust that get past your sun glasses and enjoy the drive even more.

- Scuba diving – a diving school is located in the hotel grounds and good snorkelling and instruction available from a private jetty that takes you over the reef. This was a big factor in selecting this hotel for our trip. Day trips further out along the coast and diving wrecks are available with boats staffed by professional, well organised instructors and crew.

- Visiting the old market – basically an attempt to reproduce an authentic Arab market but really its a warren of stalls/shops hawking all the same stuff. Its fun to barter but don’t bother going if you can’t cope with endless cheap sales banter and reproduction goods.

The Royal Grand Sharm Hotel has a german speaking Guest services. That was very helpfull for us to get information about Egypt and hotel services. We used the SPA every day. The haman bath and the medical massages were excellent.
The culture of the russian guests (80% of all guest) is not the same like me. I couldn't not ignore it, it was my feeling especially in the restaurtants of the hotel.

FOOD WHAT A DISGRACE - You cannot believe your eyes. If the thought hot food was to be served hot then it should be hot - not cold or luke warm. It was a joke. We lived off more or less soup for two weeks. Even the a la carte restaurant - you cannot belive it, we start in the bar watching staff prepare the meals, food was put on to a plate 10 minutes before it was served and nothing to keep it warm.

The rooms were in need of a good make over, bed was creaking all the time, lamps with tears in the shades, and the bathroom well what more could I say, it is antiquated. The grounds were kept managed but the paths had holes in them, out side a door was a raised manholes cover which we frequently tripped over - lucky not to break anything. Tiles broken on stairs and many many more things

On the plus side I feel sorry for the staff having to put up with ancient equipment and be expected to keep smiling. The staff were very good. But it is down to management to make sure that things are up to standard.

THIS IS NOT A FIVE STAR HOTEL THIS IS A THREE STAR AT THE MOST - IF YOU LIKE YOUR FOOD DON'T GO HERE - BIG MISTAKE

Room Tip: Don't go !!!!!! if you do chose rooms from 200 and not 500 as they are near the stage and it is...

Just returned from a weeks stay over the Xmas period, and overall we were very happy with the value at the Royal Grand. (Traveled as 2 couples with 2 small children, ages 2 and 4).
We paid just £110 each for 7 nights AI!!! We got a great deal considering we booked just weeks before arrival, typically however, we were stung by the flights! But that aside, we feel we got excellent value for money. We picked this hotel based on others reviews so I will be as honest as possible!! :)

We arrived in the eve and the hotel looked amazing all decorated for Xmas, the kids loved it! But our arrival was not the best start.....
We assumed that dinner would at least still be open, however we were told by reception that dinner had closed at 9 (we arrived at 9.15) but a plate of food was offered to be delivered within 15 mins to our room. We were also told that we would have to pay extra for the xmas gala dinner but this was not advertised when we booked. As we had young children we asked for the food to be sent, and said we would think about the dinner as it was an extra £38 per person! After 45 mins of waiting in our room (with over tired hungry children) I had to ring reception a couple of times to ask where the food was. They politely apologized and said the food would be with us in 5 mins, and it was.
We received a plate each with an apple, a bread roll and cheese, which after waiting 45 minutes for we were disappointed with.

The rooms were a little dated (it seemed that some were undergoing renovation), but they had all the amenities and ample storage and good position. The first morning we discovered a lovely huge pool area with a view of the sea. There was a heated smaller pool (during winter months) which was perfect for us with small children.
We went down to a lovely breakfast which had lots of choice including freshly made omelettes, eggs, pancakes etc. The food really was delicious (and we had a few fussy eaters among us)! Each day there was different choices and I never ate the same thing more than twice for lunch or dinner (excluding the cakes that we're delicious!) Couldn't fault the food and travelling with small children that was the most important thing for us! None of us got ill, they wash all salad in bottled water and ice is bottled water too so you don't have to worry over that.

The down side to the dining was experiencing the Russians in the hotel. We were astounded at how greedy and rude they were to the staff. They would pile plates of food up high and leave it uneaten, which didn't affect us, but the worse thing was the fight to get to the strawberries at the desert buffet...!!!They piled high huge dinner plates before even getting their starters so that there was none left for the other guests, and when the staff did bring out a fresh bowl, they were like vultures! Quite funny at first until my two year old son wanted strawberries and I had to fight for scraps with very ignorant grown men!
We didn't let this bother us too much and if you wanted to there was also the option to eat lunch at the pool bar which was waited on, the food there was lovely too and there was plenty to choose from on the set menu. The hotel had a few different nationalities staying and overall we found fellow guests very pleasant and friendly and our children made friends.

The hotel grounds were very spacious and it never felt too crowed, there was always loungers available around the pools or the beach and the hotel felt quite busy. The sea was mainly coral which you are not allowed walk on but when the tide was in you could paddle. The kids loved the sand beach but we had to keep a watchful eye out as there were a lot of huge rocks and steps leading down to the sand, not ideal for younger children but the views were lovely. There is also a floating jetty but with young children we only visited this once. There is also a beach bar which was nice to sit at.
There was evening entertainment every night outside but as it was cooler we sat inside most evenings. There was a late bar, but when we visited to take our children to the mini disco we were shocked to discover you had to pay for drinks in here ... we only went once!

As the hotel do provide lovely meals via room service, I think that they could greatly improve their service for welcoming guests arriving slightly later than meal times....I think this would have made a huge difference to our first impressions...
The other downside to our stay was we had to check out at 12 am therefore our AI ended but our flight wasn't until 9pm. As we didn't arrive in time for our first nights meal it was a shame we couldn't be offered lunch or dinner on our last day (especially with small children).

The bonus of the stay was getting an invitation to the Gala Dinner, (which we were initially told we would have to pay for) ?!? But the dinner, which was hosted on Xmas Evening was amazing. The management went to a lot of effort, and the food, cocktails and decor were superb! Father Christmas gave out presents to the children and they made us feel special. This evening made up for the bad start and was well worth the £38 if we had paid it, but as AI we feel it should have been advertised.
They also made an effort on Xmas day for the children as Father Christmas para-sailed in on a boat and then rode a camel through the grounds while the children followed him cheering, then he gave them all a present of fruit and biscuits which I thought was nice to see all the children appreciate!
Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel. It was excellent value and positioned close by to shops and entertainment. The beach was nice and the staff were very hardworking. (Apart from one girl who instead of cleaning the reception toilets, hid in there to use her phone and pick her nose!!!)
During our last few days the hotel grounds were under transformation ready for NYE celebrations, they had lots of men working hard for 4/5 days putting up a huge marque and decorations and we were really disappointed we were going to miss it! It looked really impressive!
I would certainly visit this hotel again, as I can see the management are trying to make improvements all the time........

Room Tip: We stayed in room 107 (ground floor) which was central to everything. If you want a quieter room blo...

Dear Mr/s Gemma,

Thank you very much for choosing our Royal Grand Sharm resort and for taking the time to write your review on tripadvisor.com
We are delighted to know that you had an enjoyable stay, that it was excellent value, you were satisfied with catering, hotels’ grounds and Xmas Event.
We would apologize for 45 minutes waiting of food delivering by room service.
Concerning extra price was offered for guest as a package for Xmas event including: Xmas dinner, bottle of red wine and Bedouin dinner on next day.
The drinks at the disco are extra, lobby bar is serving till midnight in the bar inside and outside at the terrace. But in cold weather when night entertainment is held in the disco bar, the drinks inside are included.
On departure day All inclusive is ended at 12:00 pm, if you arrived late on first day you are entitled to have lunch in main restaurant with the drinks instead of first day.
We apologize for any inconvenience during your stay and we are looking forward to welcoming you at Royal Grand Sharm in the near future with our own tradition of warm and friendly hospitality.
Yours truly,

Just back from a week's All Inclusive to this lovely hotel. Fantastic and well maintained hotel and grounds with great pools, restaurants, food and staff. First class service from all staff at all times. Very much enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone thinking about heading out to Sharm. Thanks to everyone in the hotel for their attention and service we all had during our stay. Michael & Co, Scotland.

Room Tip: Choose this hotel as the food was good and hotel grounds etc were excellent.

Just had a week at this hotel, excellent value for money, I own a 4 star BxB that has a 100% rating over a 4 year period, so I have a good idea of peoples expectations, As a 5 star it is comparable with many hotels in sharm , for food, rooms etc, but for me what sets this hotel apart was the service, From the floor manager, Ashraf Fawzy, who is a charming man, who took time to solve the smallest of problems personally, all the reception staff down to the towel boys, every one was happy to make your stay a great experience, I have lived in Sharm and worked there,I know what to expect on your first day, with all the guys trying to sell excursions ,spars, etc, its the same in all hotels, I'm not going to comment on the Russians its been said in previous comments and agree totally. rooms are of a good standard, choose one that suits your needs, I wanted peace and quite and got that in room 811, do your research to find what is for you on here, I am taking my own advice, I'm booked to go back on the 7th Jan, says it all really, I booked with Hotels4yu.com £284.00 for all inclusive for two persons,

Room Tip: it depends on your needs , I chose 811 for a peaceful stay, and got it,

We decided to return to the Royal Grand Sharm Hotel less than 12 months after our first visit due to the excellent value for money we experienced. Outwardly the Hotel hadn't changed since our last visit but once inside we noticed some changes. We were met with the usual friendly reception but this time with the added bonus that everyone seemed to recognize that we were return visitors. I can't tell you how good that makes you feel to be received with a "welcome back Mr & Mrs ...". On our first visit we had stated that we enjoyed the rooms we were given so the hotel put us back in the same area - again that was so well received. Many of the staff were recognisable to us and also us to them which again made us feel welcome and comfortable.
We were very lucky during the first week that the hotel was far from full (due either to the unrest being experienced in Cairo or the time of year - mid Sep) but we had the beach virtually to ourselves - what bliss! The second week though the Russians arrived in force and the ambiance of the hotel changed recognizably as the staff, pleasant for the first week were subjected to arrogant and ignorant displays and generally poor manners from the Eastern European visitors. However they coped amazingly and didn't let their standards drop nor their pleasant demeanour to us Brits!
The Dining area had changed significantly for the better as the outside area was better floored and now covered against the severe sun.
As per our last review, the hotel is not the newest in the area and is noticeably wearing however everything inside the hotel and the rooms is functional and exactly what you need to enjoy your stay. The servicing staff were exceptional, keeping the rooms as good as they could be and providing us with amusement whenever we returned to the room to see what sort of towel animal was on display and using which of our items we'd left out.
If you're friendly to the staff here they reciprocate in spades. It is incredibly good value and in a great location - there is ample shops and entertainment within a 400m walk from the hotel along quiet and safe streets.
We like it here and look forward to returning again.
