“Ain Khudra / Ein Hudra”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2011

This is an interesting Bedouin oasis, reputedly on the original pilgrims route from Jordan to Mount Sinai and with links to the early history of St Catherine’s Monastery. There is a fascinating water source that must have been in use for thousands of years.

The oasis is now a fairly popular destination for camel safari’s and day trips to the desert from Dahab and Nuweiba, many of which involve a lunch stop at the oasis.

(Ain Khudra means ‘green eye’ which refers to the shape of the main well. We were told it should be written as Ein Hudra not Ain Khudra which has a different meaning).

The oasis is not marked on most maps and use of a Bedouin guide is recommended – we were told stories, maybe apocryphal, of tourist groups becoming lost in the area.

We visited by four-wheel drive jeep organised by www. bedouina.com.eg in Dahab. Be warned one of the access routes (there are at least two) is not for the faint-hearted or those who get travel sick!

“Ain Khudra a marvellous oasis in the desert.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2010

Ain Khudra is a very small oasis located 12 km north for Nuweiba, approx. 8 km away from the main road (way from Nuweiba to St. Catherine). This marvellous place is a very beautiful example for an oasis.
Hot water is coming up from the ground and there are palm trees and guava trees. Only a few Beduines are living here with some goats. I had tea and eat dinner vith the Bedouines. There was an old Bedouin woman dressed in their traditional colothes and jewelrys who made bread in an ironplate in the traditional way. Normally tourists only drink tea here but I had this extra experience.
It is recommend to accept the offered service from the Beduines because access only by 4x4 vehicle or camel. I stayed in Mousa Camp in Nuweiba, when I made this trip, and the owner, Mousa Hassan, who is very nice, organized the tour for me. You can call him (--) and he will organize whatewer you want to see or do - also even you don´t stay in his camp.
