Despite some initial reservations about visiting Egypt for the first time, mainly as we had heard mixed reports we eventually chose booked through Golden Ticket Travel for a Red Sea Holidays package to the Makadi Palace. We had the option of The Grand Makadi (which was about £40 cheaper per person) and also the Makadi Spa (about £100 more expensive pp) but we chose the Makadi Palace as in the main the reviews were very good and we didn't want to pay much more than we did (£529 pp).
As we booked 3 days before departure, we had to pick up tickets at the Servisair desk at Manchester airport. We were told to get there 3 hours before departure, but the Servisair representative didn't turn up for 45minutes, which was really annoying, especially as seats were allocated on check in, so we ended up right at the back of the check in queue, which was also poorly organised and resulted in us only just making the flight despite being at the airport 3 hours early!!! I have emailed Golden Ticket Travel & Red Sea Holidays to advise them about these issues and hopefully they will get them sorted for future last minute travellers.
Anyway - onto the hotel! It far exceeded my expectations; it is beautiful and has tranquil gardens and a massive pool that weaves in and around the whole complex. There are many dining options, 2 buffet restaurants and 3 a la carte restaurants on site and the option of 5 more ala cartes at the 'Makadi Mall' complex which is just outside the hotel entrance. The food was of a good quality, and in some instances excellent. There was a good variety and we particularly liked the omellete and fried egg stations for breakfast. The Makadi Mall is a little bit like a small version of 'The Orient' area at the Trafford Centre, it has a few shops and 5 restaurants around the edges(An Italian, Chinese, Indian, Egyptian and a French), with a stage and screen in the centre, which I assume in high season will have entertainment and perhaps movies. I believe all the hotels in the Makadi compound can access the Mall area, via booking with the hotel reservation centre. As we were only staying for a week we did not get to eat in all of the restaurants, that is how much choice there was.
The drink options were good, nothing special but the beer and wine (red, white & rose) were perfectly drinkable. There were spirits and cocktails, but they were a bit harsh, so we stuck to the beer and wine. For the price, I wasn't too disappointed with this, but if we had paid more I would expect some better spirit/mixer/cocktail options.
I think all of the rooms are junior suites, which have a sofa area, it was nice to have somewhere to relax other than just the bed, The bathroom was large and had a bath & shower, and bizarrely a telephone next to the toilet :) The room was ever so slightly tired, as the hotel is 10 years old, but it was pefectly clean and the towels were soft.
Pool towels are provided and are exchanged each evening by a staff member coming to the room.
There is a Piano Bar, which was very nice and atmospheric, with soft lighting and music, and also the Jokers bar which is more clubby/fun pub which has nightly entertainment (i.e. snake dancer, acrobats, belly dancer, spinney man) we didn't tend to go in this bar as it was a bit noisy, but we were informed that the entertainment was of a high quality compared to other Egyptian resorts.
We did a trip to Cairo to visit the Cairo Museum and the Giza Pyramids. We opted for the 1 day by flight as we didn't fancy a 12 hour round trip by coach. This meant it was quite expensive (£200 pp as opposed to £80pp by coach) but as I have always wanted to see the Pyramids and we were only there for a week, it was worth the expense.
The staff were so good, they were very friendly and you can tell that they are coached in hospitality as they cannot do enough for you. Around the pool a waiter will bring you drinks all day long, you really do get very lazy! We tipped around a $1 each or every other time we were brought a drink, but other people didn't bother, but they said that they still received good service regardless.
All in all we had a fantastic time and we would definitely return. I wish I had known how nice Egypt resorts were years ago as I would have come sooner!
Our room was quiet, but a little far away from the action. Next time I will ask for a room near to t...
