Dependent on experiences and standards one’s view of any hotel is obviously a subjective matter. Recently returning from a week’s half board stay in the ‘Makadi’ resort, the ‘Star’ neither disappointed nor captivated me.
Booked through Hayes & Jarvis, which seems to have exclusivity for British visitors, in a hotel that is predominantly for German, Russian and Eastern European tourists. The ‘Star’ is one of approximately six hotels in the resort of ‘Makadi’ about 30 minutes south of Hurghada Airport. It is the furthest hotel from the sea, only a short walk through the grounds of the other hotels in the complex.
The staff on the whole were very pleasant and friendly. Check in was a simple task. The superior room was on the 3rd floor and large enough for a small family. As a previous correspondent has stated, it looked out over the side of the hotel and onto the building land next door. Although machinery was working during the day, noise was kept to a minimum. Room service was good and any requests were always attended to, albeit eventually. The room had a fridge with soft drinks and water, room safe and air conditioning.
There is one large pool and one very small kiddies pool but you can use the other hotels amenities if you wish. Next door is the Sol y Mar which is very similar. The ‘Star’ has a private beach which seemed very enclosed with wicker wind breakers, but as we witnessed, a much need requirement as the wind is quite strong. However, lots of people in a very small space.
The hotel also hosts a Spa which unfortunately we did not use.
Meals were served in the large dining hall and consisted of hot and cold buffet. There was ample choice of all foods both at breakfast and evening meal and the standard of food was good. There was a small ‘premium’ dining area outside but you had to arrive early to claim your stake. The majority of sun beds had the ‘reserved’ towels strategically placed by 9am and towels were available from the small hut in the garden.
Other than the usual trips to Cairo, Luxor and the diving, the area of Makadi offers little of interest or sightseeing. One of the major attractions therefore is the tranquillity the hotel offers. It is a ‘cashless’ hotel, with the majority of guests being all inclusive. If you do purchase anything then the amount is added to your room bill which you settle and the end of your stay.
Wifi is available in the lobby only at 40LE an hour. There is a standalone PC for guests to use. Each night there is some form of musical entertainment on the patio and entertainment is also provided in other parts of the complex. Across the street is a supermarket for top ups and nibbles for the room.
If it is a relaxing week by the pool in the sunshine, then the Makadi Star may just be for you. Would I recommend the Makadi Star to family and friends... if they wanted a such a holiday, maybe.. Would I visit the hotel again.... time to move on.
