Have returned from the Sunrise Royal on 20th November for one week - may I just say one week was just not enough!! This was our first time staying at the Sunrise Resort and also first time in Hurghada, although we have visited other parts of Egypt twice before. The hotel resort is in the middle of no where but the resort offers so much that it is not so much of a problem.
On checking in - we were a little to surprised to find our room was a little run down. For example there were locks falling off the bathroom door, the outside door lock was also broken, the fridge wouldn't close properly and in general it was very dull and very poor quality of linen/lighting etc. I thought staying for a week in this room would make us feel very unhappy so we went to reception and explained our problem where we were then told there was a much better room available and would we like to see it. After viewing the other room, it was of much better standard in a different block closer to the beach so without any problems at all we were moved to the new room and all our bags moved for us as well. Not a great start, but the problem was solved immediately and very efficiently by staff!
In the welcome meeting on the first day - we thought it was a great idea to have the management team presented to the guests to make themselves familiar to everyone if we should need any assistance. In the meeting, we found that as English guests who have booked with Thomas cook we are entitled to eat in ANY of the 7 A la Carte restaurants included in our package (My partner and I came fully prepared to pay for theses!) We were told (and also previous reviews state) that a lot of Russians crowd the main buffet restaurant. This made me worry slightly about what the standards of food would be in each but I can honestly say I have had some of the most memorable meals during my stay here.
Mexican - Nothing too special food wise but lovely staff - so friendly!!
T bones Steak house - Best steak EVER - my partner actually cut through his fillet steak using the back of his knife!
Bedouin - such an experience to sit on cushions just as the Bedouin's do, amazing restaurant, you can also choose to sit on a table under the stars! - Really great food and service just the same!
Greek fish restaurant - Best feta cheese starter and the most amazing Seabass with feta sauce for main course - wish I could have eaten here twice!
Asian - I will now have trouble eating Asian food back here in the UK as I believe the Asian restaurant here is the best ever - cashew nut sauce - lush!!
Unfortunately we did not have time to eat in the Mediterranean or Italian restaurant but I'm sure they are not to be missed!
Even the main restaurant served lovely lunches and breakfasts - just get in there early and it is all fine. There are also fresh pizzas served during the day in the Pergola pool bar! You would not be fed up with food selection staying here for two weeks so thank you to Sunrise Royal for letting us enjoy all of these restaurants!
We went on 3 trips during our stay - glass bottom boat, trip to Mahmaya Island and snorkelling, Desert adventure (highly recommended!!) - all trips were so enjoyable with really helpful staff.
Back to the hotel - ALL staff are SO friendly and cannot do enough to help, great selection of drinks - local of course. The cocktail list even changed towards the end of the week keeping it interesting to the guests. The grounds are kept immaculately, the pool areas are spotless and you cannot fault any general cleaning of this hotel. The animation team had so much fun and energy even though we just watched them rather than being involved! The beds were unbelievably comfy!! Only one slight problem are the Russians - I guess it is just there culture but they do not like to queue and always seem to push in a be rude!!
Over all this is a great hotel - is it 5*? I'm not too sure as it is difficult to compare to other hotels - however for me it was 5*, and if I stay again I will just asked for a better room choice, with a hotel this size I understand all rooms cannot be upgraded all at the same time!
