“"Welcome home" - absolutely correct slogan for this hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2011

We just returned from Sunrise Royal Makadi. It was my 6th time stay in this hotel during last 3.5 years and every time I come here I want to say that "welcome home' is absolutely correct slogan for SRM. Hotel's management and whole staff created for us very warm atmosphere. They took care about any single our needs in very fast & professionally. Hotel is huge and more than 700 people work here to provide us the service. Those of people who have the experience to manage the people would understand how to difficult to do it with 700 employee, but management of SRM can do it. Hotel is expanding and every visit you can find more new things. This time we found out 4 new a la carte restaurants which was good surprise for us. Proper balance between cost and level of the service is mostly important for me in the hotel , and it perfectly works in SRM. They can continue to keep almost the same price for the night during last 3 years in spite on the crisis and very difficult political environment. Good choice of the meals, cleaning & beach service stays remain. For those of people who complain about size of the rooms and service I would advise to stay in Jumerah 5+ hotels in Dubai and your expectations will be fully met, but be ready to pay several times higher cost than in SRM.

Having stayed in 5* hotels in Egypt - Taba, Sharm etc. we were disappointed with this hotel. Dispite the good reviews, this hotel is actually only average. For families with young or teenage children - this would be a great hotel, with a massive complex with many swimming pools, a good daytime Animation team and even in the main restaurant a kids section with mini tables....

Just returned on Friday 4th November after 1 week. Weather was fantastic. Really liked the adults only pool area with large, comfortable sun beds. Beach was rather crowded and noisy.

However, if you are an adult couple, looking for a relaxing, quiet, luxury hotel - this is not the place..... Be warned of the following....
1) To book any of the 7 Al a Carte restaurants, you have to book 24 hours in advance. This means waking early and queing for about 45 minutes every morning to book the restaurants.... The booking system is terrible and incredibly frustrating!
2) One day there were no TOWELS at the beach.....
3) The main restaurant food is really not up to scratch. There maybe salads, chips, meats - and on the first night we were reasonably pleased. But after a few nights, you soon get bored of the same food.
4) In the main restaurant, you are not shown to a table... You literally have to search around for a table in a very busy, noisy restaurant.... again, frustrating.
5) Rooms are smaller than expected. After the first night with our air conditioning not working in block 23 we moved to 2nd floor room in block 26 which was the same size, but the bathroom was considerably nicer and no cracked tiles in the shower. Thomas Cook Rep was not helpful. But Reception staff helped after some strong words and refusing to accept that the hotel was full.
6) Being given plastic cups at the pool is also frustrating. I would like my all inclusive beer - both cold and in a glass. I understand this is a health and safety requirement - but again, rather lacking....
7) Entertainment in the evening is rather awful. Fine for kids or teenagers. A shame there is not more professional shows.
8) One good point, we did not get the dreaded Egyptian belly until the last day....
9) Unlimited bottles of chilled water and coffees from the Nescafe machines is really good.
10) Note there is a dress code for no sports wear and trousers for men at night, which we were not clear on until we arrived. Not clear on the Direct Holidays website.
11) If you are flying with Thomas Cook - definitely book your seats in advance both ways. Return flight especially as security at Hurghada airport takes over an hour. Plus there is NO entertainment at all on the flight. Disappointing.

My advice is - be persistent. If you are not happy say so, then the hotel staff start to pay attention. If you are a couple wanting somewhere romantic, look at El Gouna (nicer area) or a larger hotel chain. This is a family focussed hotel.

Room Tip: Book a sea or pool view and request a 2nd floor room. The rooms are more or less the same, but some...

First of all please check the room you have booked. There were 4 of us booked into a cramped small room. This was not what we booked! One of the beds was not even a proper bed, it was 2 matresses put together! There was stains on the other beds & the blankets were not CLEAN & smelt discusting. When we complained & asked for a change of room, the front office manager was very rude, was not interested in helping us & told us the hotel was fully booked. In my opinion this was just so he didn't have to help us. The Thomas Cook rep did nothing to help either so we were stuck with this.

The TV was like something out of the dark ages & the air con was pointless as it was ineffective. The bathroom towels are of a poor quality. The pools, although beautiful, were rarely used as they were freezing cold (except for 2) & closed early. In the outside gym, (well not really a gym, just a few exercise machines),several of them are out of order.

The entertainers were amatures & it rarely lasted more than an hour, bingo would have been more exciting.

Only got to try 1 A la Carte restaurant as you had to queue for at least an hour each day to reserve a place & by the time you got to book most of the slots had been taken. For a so called 5 star hotel, this is a very poor system & needs improvement.

The hotel is looking very shabby & needs a complete refurbishment. There was broken tiles & lights & exposed cables & yes it stank on an evening when the gardens were watered as filtered sewage water was used.

Although the hotel is right on the beach, it is NOT soft & sandy but more like a grit beach. If you walk left along the beach about 15-20 minutes, you will come across a beautiful sandy stretch of beach (outside the Sun Wing Water Hotel). This is also a great stretch of sea to go snorkelling in as it has got loads of coral with many different kinds of colourful fish. You don't need to go on a boat trip as you will see loads of fish here.

The hotel needs to address the wild birds going into the food areas. You may think it cute at first but when you see the droppings all over the chairs & pecking at the food, its concerning.

The weather & sea is fantastic but the hotel complex, to us, felt like you were in a prison. There is a huge wall surrounding the hotel with security at the entrance. There is nothing close to the hotel where you can walk to so you do really just stop on the complex.

In our opinion the hotel does not meet the standards & quality that we would expect to see from a 5 star hotel. We certainly would not recommend this hotel to anyone until the issues above were resolved & would not go back again. We saw many other hotels in the same location & if we did go back (which is unlikely due to its isolated location) we would choose another one.

Room Tip: Book another hotel & check what room you will be getting

My husband, daughter and I returned yesterday from a week at the Sunrise Royal Makadi Resort near Hurghada. There were lots of hits with the hotel, but a few misses too.

Our room was in Block 10 by the family pool and was lovely. The bathroom was basic but clean and well lit. The family pool was large and had four slides and was next to the playground and Kids' Clubs, and also had it's own swim up pool bar. However, the water in this pool is pretty cold (but it didn't stop us going in or on the slides!)

Overall, the food was lovely - much better than I expected. The Italian, Asian and Beduin a la Carte restaurants were all fantastic. However, to book you had to queue for up to an hour each morning in the 'Victoria Pub'. This system was ridiculous and really eats into your morning. The fact that it is called a pub is also misleading - it's basically a room with some pool tables in it (which you also have to book to use!).

The main buffet should be avoided as it is completely chaotic. There is no Maitre D' in charge and so you have to wander round to try and find your own table and it is pot luck whether you get served a drink in the evenings, or tea and coffee in the mornings (or a cup to drink it from). Much better to head to the Dalila restaurant which also serves breakfast and lunch and is a lot nicer.

The main pool bar also serves lunch from about midday - you can have burgers, chips, pizza, salads, pasta or soup. Pretty good for a pool bar.

There are six swimming pools. The sports pool and the children's pool were both heated. The main pool is again pretty chilly but we still went in it. There is always quite a breeze on that part of the coast so it can sometimes feel cool when you come out of the heated pools. It might have been the time of year that we went (end October) but there was no awful early morning scramble to reserve sun loungers - there were always plenty available.

The beach is nice and great for children but does get quite crowded. The snorkelling isn't amazing but it's good for swimming. We went on the inflatable chair which is then pulled along behind a speed boat round the bay - warning: not for the fainthearted!

We would definitely recommend the day trip to Mahmya Island - it's like a little slice of paradise but you will need to take a hoodie for the boat trip as it is pretty breezy!

Overall, the hotel was very clean and the food very good. The pools and beach were nice and it never felt too crowded or noisy (apart from the main buffet). I think the service from their staff let it down a bit - a couple of stand out staff members but the others not brilliant. For example, I don't expect to have to ask four different waiters for a spoon so my daughter doesn't have to eat her cereal with a fork, or end up borrowing milk from a neighboring table because we weren't given any in what purports to be a five-star hotel!

It was a good holiday and we had a good time. It wouldn't take much for this hotel to go from being pretty good to outstanding - just a few tweaks and it could be fantastic.

Room Tip: Block 10 was lovely - room was quiet and right by the family pool.

Just returned from SRMB after 1 week break, large hotel (600+rooms), but with plenty of facilities, some pools were heated after first couple of days, now classed as winter by management, up till then sea was warmer, 7 a ia carte restaurants, however they need to be booked in 'the pub with no beer' or victoria pub (that always has the bar closed), the morning before visit. It took me over one hour to do this. A lot of people say the main buffet is busy and it was, lots of Russians also, but the selection and quality of food on offer was outstanding, yes service could be a little slow, but standard of cleanliness very good. The Egyptians work really hard and long at these hotels, so feel it important to tip as they dont earn a great deal and appreciate a dollar or two.

Room Tip: Email hotel blocks 12 and 14 are fairly central

My grandson (12) & i went with Thomas Cook to the Sunrise Royal & i have to say we were pleased with everything the hotel had to offer, we paticularly liked the a la carte restaurants, a big thanks to Mr Mahmoud the manager who was a true gentleman & Nesma who always had a lovely smile. The main buffet was very busy as it is a huge hotel complex, evening meals in there were a bun fight with the Russians.

We went at the end of October & whilst the air temperature was in the late 29s the constant wind made it feel about 20deg, on this basis when we go back we will try early Sept as the sea was a bit cold for both of us though warmer than the hotel pools which only become heated on 1st November.

A lovely break could have had longer than a week as it was half term & had to return for school, would definatly go back with my grandchildren, we learned to wind surf & went quad biking into the Red Sea desert & of course snorkling though this not as good as the Maldives as you can spend all day in the sea but not here.

Hotel rooms comfortable & clean though we had a long walk from block 29 to reception so you may need to bear this in mind if your not as good on your pins as you used to be.

Everyone in the hotel were very friendly & accomodating cant speak more highly of them.

Room Tip: Perhaps older travellers need to ensure they dont have to far to walk.

Spent 2 weeks at the Sunrise Makadi , we booked throw Thomas cook

The hotel is not a bad value for money but defiantly not a five stars even by Egyptian standards
Main restaurant very busy and not organised while around the world is less busy however if you go there for your breakfast or lunch it’s mainly the leftover from last night with a very limited choice

The al carte restaurant is much better than eating in the main restaurant
The Steakhouse and the Bedouin were brilliant, both food and service are very good
The Mediterranean is very unorganized and service is so bad .
The rest is ok
We all had Stomach Problems which we never had when we visited any five stars hotel in our previous holidays in Egypt

Hotel staff is great and i would say it’s the biggest asset for the hotel
Big thanks to the assistant executive chef (Mohamed) who looked after us really well
Also (Mohamed Rabea) from The Steakhouse (the family pool) and all his team, also Moamen from the Pergola bar and the staff in the Bedouin restaurant too

The holiday was ok for what we paid but personally i won’t compromise again
