I had high expectations of this hotel but it failed drastically in a lot of ways. First of all this is rated 5* by the Egyptian tourist board. This is because of the facilities it has not because it is luxurious, cos it ain't. More 3-4*
Main clientele were Germans with a smattering of Russians & us! Very very German orientated.
Arrived at 7p.m and was told to take a seat in reception. No welcome drink was offered and we were given our keys, a map of the hotel with the restaurant times on the back. I had some requests when booking i.e double bed, upper floor, quiet room pref with a sea view. I also emailed the hotel. Didn't expect to get them all but when shown to our room we had been allocated a pokey room with twin beds on the ground floor overlooking the kids pool! I walked half way in and walked straight back out! After 30 minutes of much panic by the bell boy and several heated conversations with the reception we got a quiet room, on the top floor, double bed and garden view. Now what was wrong with them giving us this in the first place?
The room was spacious but tired, good standard of cleanliness but featureless really. Our room cleaner was good and made sure we always had plenty of water in the mini bar. They said the MB was free but all it contains is water & 4 bottles of pop so don't get excited. There are no tea coffee making facilities in the room despite me noticing on a picture on their website that there was. One american channel on T.V, Fox movies.
Next day after eating in the main buffet restaurant I had stomach gripes & diarrhoea. Now to be fair you are going to get this no matter what if you are staying in an AI hotel in Egypt. Not always fault of restaurants/staff but of some of the guests and their dirty habits. I shuddered at some of the things that they did. My husband had the same bug a few days later. There is a pharmacy on site which has 'the cure' for €16. There was 5 people in there when I went to get my cure all with the same problem.
On the subject of the restaurants, although the food was pretty good, all the restaurants are buffet. No a la carte available. I have never experienced this before and believe me I have travelled all over the world. I have had AI hotels charge for the a-l-c restaurants but we don't mind that. The food got very same ole, same ole by the end of 2 weeks. Italian restaurant was the best and the staff in there were fabulous. The maitre D mucked in with his 'boys' and they made our stay a lot better than it would have been.
There was no guest book in the room. Didn't know what time internet, tennis, pools, spas opened and what actual facilities were available. The map they gave us was not comprehensive.
I am a non smoker and my husband an ex smoker. We could not take advantage of the bars and entertainment because there were no non-smoking areas and it was absolute hell with the sheer volume of smoke everywhere. Walk quickly through the lobby and by the other side you are stinking of smoke. It shocked me that parents were quite blatantly smoking with the kids perched next to them inhaling the stuff. We had to sit outside freezing our backsides off in the evening to get away from some of it.
Spa staff were great, Had a brilliant masseuse called Arlem. She was so lovely I will sorely miss her skills on my poorly back.
Most of the staff were good, some of the reception staff could do with a teaching session on hospitality from the waiting staff/ cleaners etc.
I asked for an iron & ironing board the first day because some of my evening dresses were a little creased and was told that the hotel does not supply them. I would need to send them to the laundry for pressing at £2 a press! I have never been in a hotel that did not have this service available. I went to a local supermarket & bought an iron for £8.
Beach, pools were good with comfortable sunbeds although again it is all a little tired. They are painting communal areas at the moment.
The bay that the hotel is set on is cut off from the main red sea by a big sandbar. The water in the bay is freezing this time of year but walk out onto the sandbar and swim the other side and the water is warmer and snorkelling much better.
Animation team are good and they tried their hardest to get people up and active. Good trips available from the beach tour operators.
My husband loved the lagoons in the hotel grounds with the fish swimming about, being watched by snowy egrets and herons awaiting an opportunity to nab a quick snack.
BTW this hotel is on the main flightpath into Hurghada airport and the aircraft are noisy and low flying. At 2 a.m the planes were still coming and going.
Loved the decor in reception, has given me a lot of ideas for decorating!
Went to Abu Tig marina in El Gouna. Taxi driver took us for 200LE (£20) stayed for 3 hours and brought us back. Bargain. If I ever go back it will be to El Gouna, it's a whole different ball game. Beautiful.
