We were looking for some winter sun and we had been to Hurghada 2 years ago but at the end of February rather than the beginning of January as we did this time. The sun was out but the wind dropped the temperature quite considerably, to the point that we had to buy fleeces just to keep warm during the day! However we did have a relaxing holiday, which was greatly needed.
So to the hotel, first impressions are always important and on checking in the foyer flattered to deceive. This area was fairly well maintained and looked quite grand so we anticipated the same standard for our room but whilst the room was a decent size we were disappointed one or two things but with the bathroom in particular. There was mould on the wall above the bath, some grouting appeared to be missing and the shower couldn't be used sensibly as it wouldn't stay at the top of the riser bar. The locking mechanism for the shower head didn't work and so it kept dropping to the bottom of the bar - you needed to be either a four year old or one of the 7 dwarves to get a proper shower! We did hear similar comments from other guests about the bathrooms. On looking round at the rest of the hotel it seemed tired and in need of some TLC really.
We know that when it comes to food tastes vary, particularly when dealing with different nationalities, but we felt that the food was average and lacked quality, although the soup was usually very good. Maybe less choice but better quality?
The staff were not unfriendly but didn't put themselves out and some were real "jobs worth" which we found strange compared to other places we have been to in Egypt. However the guy on the door and one of the cleaner guys were lovely, happy souls who smiled and said hello every time they saw you. Also Essam in the Siva bar was extremely hard working & great at keeping the drink and nibbles coming. A good tip at the beginning of your holiday works a treat y'know.
