Booked this hotel last minute as a bed and breakfast package with Red Sea Holidays for a week. - wanted to get away and relax relatively cheaply after my finals at uni! The flights were with Monarch and included in the package price - the flight on the way there was comfortable, the provided meal was reasonably good, and there was good luggage allowance for a budget airline . On arrival we were greeted at the airport by Red Sea Holiday reps, all were friendly and helpful, and we had included transport to the hotel. The reps organise an introductory meeting at the hotel - this was actually of great help and gave us an opportunity to investigate the available activities - at first i thought the presence of the reps were going to be intrusive and annoying as i don't usually book package holidays or tours, but their help was invaluable to us in organising our many outings (especially snorkelling and diving trips, which was our main interest). We booked an activity for every day - desert safari, day trip to Luxor (absolutely worth going - one of the best tours), several snorkelling trips and a day of diving (my boyfriend has his PADI advanced certification and i was a complete beginner, but they were able to organise a trip that suited us both so that we were together). The diving was excellent, i have been snorkelling around the world and the Red Sea is one of the most amazing spots i have been for snorkelling, and it was a great introduction to diving. I do have to say that the snorkelling trips were a bit disappointing in that we had huge groups of people going out together with a guide that we were supposed to follow - for a start this didn't give enough time to appreciate everything underwater but also was a bit restrictive for more experienced snorkellers (although its quite easy to break away from the group to do your own thing for a bit). Also these big groups tended to disturb the marine life and also i noticed a lot of people damaging the shallower coral which i wasn't very happy with.
Now the Hotel! Very impressed on arrival - we booked quite cheaply so were impressed with the quality. Lovely room, very spacious, clean and comfortable with a nice view of the hotel pool area - there are several pools. All amenities that we needed were there - only thing i would say is that wifi would have made the trip easier for us but not necessary - we were so tired from all our trips that we barely had energy to do anything else! Good range of food for breakfast - wasnt to my taste but others seemed to enjoy it, and there are several nice areas to sit and have your breakfast. The main hotel restaurant runs a buffet service for dinner, with lots of food from different nationalities e.g. italian, oriental, egyptian etc. It is a nice idea and the food is ok, but the service is very disorganised. Also we tried the hotel steakhouse; very nice food but awful service! I preferred going out to eat - many restaurants and bars close to the hotel - great Thai restaurant nearby i would recommend but i can't remember the name, but you will know if you are there.
The downsides: electricity seemed to stop from time to time and there would be power outs lasting a few minutes at a time, happened twice while we were there. Not what you would expect from a 4 star resort! Very inconvenient. Also, the staff, like in the rest of Egypt, make a lot of their income from tips, so they are often hassling for tips and wanting to change pound coins (that they get from tourists but can't change at the bank). This is ok, but it made me feel bad a lot of the time because i just never had a good amount of change to give, so i sometimes didn't :S
There is a bank at the hotel, which i didn't use so i can't comment, but that seemed rather useful. If you are going to Egypt for diving or snorkelling Hurghada and the Grand Resort are great places to stay. The hotel is nice for those who just want to relax and sunbathe as well - lots of sunbeds by the pool, although i did pop by the beach once and noticed that it was quite small and crowded, so that part wasn't so good.
All in all, a great place to stay if you're having a busy holiday like we did or just to relax. Highly recommended.
