“Best visit yet - perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2012

This is our fifth visit to this hotel and it did not disappoint. We were also happy to meet other guests on return visits and already planning their next, as are we. You can expect charming, friendly and welcoming staff, lovely rooms and really good food. The standard of the buffet in the evening was better than last year- both the selection and quality. The hotel management has been trying out some new ideas and varying the menus. We did not eat in the Vie restaurant as it was always empty but we believe it will be shortly changed to an Italian restaurant and think this will improve its usage. As always the range at breakfast was excellent and the pastries superb.
The beach is a great place to while away the day with a relaxing bar area serving drinks and nice food. The guys looking after the beach area are great. They are attentive, helpful and full of fun and humour ( very good with kids too). Can't wait for the new spa to be finished.
The occupancy rate was very low at this time and it is such a shame the region is suffering. Everyone at Le Meridien works so hard for you to have a good time and they really do seem to care. It is such a wonderfully relaxing and 'grown up' place to holiday. No drunks or morons to spoil things. Perfect

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms with the great sea views are worth the extra

We have just returned from the Meridian Dahab. I did read reviews before and everyone seemed very happy. Our experience surpassed our expectations - the service the hotel offers is fantastic and this made the holiday. All the staff were charming and helpful and their eye for detail was meticulous. Very impressed. Our room was lovely and the facilities were great. We ate at the restaurant (buffet) every night and there was plenty of variety and the food delicious. the breakfst were wonderful. It was a brilliant holiday - very recommended

Room Tip: We stayed in the room 712 - it had a sea view and was very comfortable and private

So you want to get some sun on your back (25 degrees), fly 5 hours, with a short transfer, eat good food, stay in comfort, have top service, enjoy a range of sports facilities on site, have a beach with water at 20 degrees, with a nearby town and more things to do and see, not pay the earth.........and avoid Russians and people who would be happier in Benidorm.

Dahab can do all this if you stay at the Meridien.

Then use the internet to get the best B&B package deal, in a standard room. We paid £519 a head. We ate in the hotel on 3 nights for 160 LE each and in town for half that on 4 nights, inc a round trip taxis.

So, with 6 beach lunches, 3 hotel dinners and 4 Dahab dinners, inc taxis, we spent about £160 each on meals. Neither of us drink much, so I have not included any cost for the odd beer. Or for excursions, £40 each to St Catherine's monastery, £23 each for the Blue Hole snorkeling and £18 each for 21/2 hours quad biking (along the beach and then up 2 routes into the wadis behind Dahab - easy and lots of fun, but take a windcheater. 30mph out of the sun is cool).

So overall, our 5* hotel, on an 'all inclusive' basis cost £680 a head.

Although the brochure shows the 'cheap' room with 2 single beds, a simple request prior gets you a a vey comfortable King size bed. All rooms have some sort of sea view, the superior one have the shower outside under an awning which might be OK in high summer and the rear of the suites open onto the footpath to the beach and pools, so are not very private.

Hotel amenities include:

Very good buffet breakfast, inc 'beef bacon' and 'chicken sausage'

3 pools, one heated. plenty of sunbeds and towels.

Dive and windsurf school on site, happy to lend out snorkel gear for free, with a coral reef just by the beach.

Sails Beach restaurant with good range of snacks, pizza ect , from about 7LE each

Impeccably discreet room boy

Unfailingly charming service everywhere, from everyone

Very mini gym with a bike, nordic trainer and some small weights, not really worth the effort

Things to know.

Do not pay for special seats on the plane. Check in earlyish and two of you will easily get aisle seats opposite each other (the pre-bookers go for window and middle) You have now saved £36.

Do not book any trips in advance. They are always cheaper on site and you can be flexible on dates.

Due to the 40 % occupancy, we had a 1 hour private car transfer as soon as we had our luggage. On the return we had a mini bus with 2 other guests. Sharm Airport departures is a real eye opener, the travellers are 'interesting'.........but the whole process was fairly painless.

Take food for the flights. It's not outrageously expensive, just pretty grisly

Take no Egyptian pounds. There is an ATM in the lobby. Use your Mastercard debit card and tell you bank before you go. The rate is c 9.5 LE to £1 , rather than 8.5 with at Travelex.

If you want to play tennis, take you own rackets and balls. The 2 courts (free) are fine but the non slip surface skins balls, so the hotel ones are pretty bald.

Wi-Fi is now free in the lobby, but not in the rooms.

The evening shuttle, although free at 8.30, is only to get into Dahab for shopping, coming back at 10/10.30. To eat out, much better to get a taxi from the lobby at 7'ish and arrange for a 10'ish pick up, costing £7 for the round trip.

Ate good fresh fish at Al Capone, El Fanar (plus great fish soup) and Friends. All were happy to serve the 42LE Obelisk red bought at the wine shop. El Fanar will go out and buy it for you at 60LE. We were advised to avoid the Obelisk White.

The good restaurants should have an attractive diplay on ice outside. Bargain for your fish, planning to pay no more that 130LE for one big enough for 2. Or half that for a medium, 1 person red snapper Do not, unless you want to end up paying double, get persuaded to have additional shrimp and calamari with it. They add nothing to the taste, just to the price. (But that's a personal thing). Didn't try any pizza, Chinese, Indian, English, so no comment.

All meals come with mezze and bread, fruit/icecream and tea. Chips cost little or nothing extra.

Learn some arabic, it's very useful and shows respect for Egyptian culture, eg

Shukrun. Thanks
La, shuckrun. No thanks (very useful when hassled...)
Ma feesh, feloose. Sorry, I have no money ( always gets a laugh and a smile)
Maya, maya. Fine
Salaam aleikum, How are you? (reply is Aleikum salaam)
Imshi. Go away, (to small children)

There must be some negatives.

The holiday rep was fine when we met him, but no contact details or meeting times were given us on arrival. We happened to bump into him in the lobby.

The Breezes evening buffet food was OK, but served in stainless steel bain-maries and had the feel of an industrial canteen. It was spotlessly efficient but souless. The themed nights were unexciting and need a complete rework to succeed.

The Vie a la carte restaurant was very undersubscribed, and my beloved's favourite Chicken and Cashew Nut main course was a cashew nut - free zone . We raised this with the charming waiter who responded fairly quickly by bringing us a dish of peanuts.... the meal itself was OK, but with wine was not good value.

There is no bar scene as such, somewhere fun to sit out at night, or under cover and have some sensibly priced drinks. There is a Happy Hour in Horizons, but it had no buzz and Happy hour at Sails on the beach was too cold. It would be nice if there was a meeting place after dinner.......maybe with some entertainment. With evenings about 12 degrees, the seating area below Horizons was not viable, but once the summer comes things will clearly hot up.

It is such a shame that the Egyptiantourist business is suffering from a negative perception of the results of the Revolution, as there is no effect at all On the plus side the charming staff have plenty of time for everyone and this really adds to the holiday expoerience.

We met a couple on their 3rd visit and we are seriously considering
a return visit next spring.

Just returned from a lovely weeks stay here with my husband and 9 month old baby. We couldn't have had a nicer holiday. The room was perfect with fantatic views of the sea (we did upgrade to a deluxe room as the terrace was ideal for our baby, plus you get the best views of the sea). The facilities were excellent, we thoroughly enjoyed lazing around in the beach bar which was very chilled and served good food. The house reef is excellent for snorkelling and the whole resort is perfect for a baby as has lots of comfy beds and pods in the shade. My husband enjoyed diving with Poseidon diving and found them to be very professional. He also did some windsurfing and waterskiing which he really enjoyed. Above all, the staff were so helpful and friendly. We would definately recommend le meridien and will hopefully go back one day.

This is a great hotel. I have nothing but praise for the architecture, the decor, service, facilities and private beach. All of which are of the highest standard. This is a wonderful 5 star hotel. It is very clean. The staff are friendly and helpful, they go out of their way to help. Most, if not all room have a sea view and balcony, which is just delightful. There is also a FREE shuttle bus that takes you to and from downtown (where you can get all your shopping done, diving activities, horse, camel riding, you name it). The food was a little drab and perhaps a bit expensive but it is a 5* hotel. I personally think its an ideal place for honeymoons as the resort is beautiful lit in the night, the private beach is clean and clean in the night too especially around early spring. 28 Feb 2012

My husband and I were looking for a bit of sun during the miserable winter here in England, and we found it in Egypt, in Dahab, a beautiful resort in the Sinai Peninsula. The hotel was luxiurious; the staff, very friendly; our rooms looked out onto the sea and were spacious and clean. My husband was disappointed at the Gym facilities which were minimal, but otherwise we had all we could wish for.
Dahab "Downtown" was like a set for the Arabian Nights, quite touristy but welcoming and exciting. The shuttle bus from the hotel went to Dahab at 11.00 am and returned at 1.00 pm, and then again at 8.30 pm and returned at 10.00 pm. Otherwise you could get a taxi for 30 Egyptian pounds (3 GBP). I have travelled in Asia and Africa before so the town was not a culture shock, however, those who have not been to such regions, may find it a little overwhelming at first meeting - the store holders and restauraters all vie for you custom. This is traditional for them, and certainly not aimed at making you feel uncomfortable - so don't be. A smile, a gesture to say that you are not interested and you will soon feel at home. The Egyptians, I found were were courteous, welcoming, full of laughter and humour and extremely flirtatious.
We went for a trip to St Catherine's Monastery into the desert. The trip itself was wonderful, and the scenery magnificent, however, we did become involved in a slight fracas when two American tourists were taken hostage by the Bedouins whilst we were travelling along the same route. The Americans were released and all was well. However, such a trip involves passing through many checkpoints so have your passports ready and I would advise going in a large group, which seems the safest. We went by taxi and eventually our taxi joined a long, armed convoy through the Bedouin areas of the Sinai. I need to stress, that because of the care that was being taken by the army and police I did not feel unsafe at all.
Dahab itself has a Bedouin district - Ansalla. It is only a kilometre from the tourist area of Dahab and very interesting - the real Egypt, as it were. I wandered round it with a friend, both of us females and did not feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
All in all we had a wonderful trip, an interesting and pleasant stay in an exciting venue.

We got a great deal on this hotel.
The rooms were big and clean, the hotel facilities ie the pools, spa and saunas were all good. The private beach was good, you could snorkel from the jetty, there was a wide variety of fish. The buffet breakfast was good, lots to choose from the fresh orange juice was great as was the omelettes. There is a free shuttle into Dahab which is good, however, the night bus which leaves at 8.30 and comes back at 10 does not give you much time to eat. Really enjoyed our stay here. Would come again.
