I have been stuck in the Farol Hotel with many of my colleagues for about 18 months. Unfortunately, because of the large numbers of UN personnel in Dili, accommodation is hard to come by, so there has been little opportunity to find accommodation elsewhere.
When I first arrived at the Farol, the hotel was of a reasonable standard of cleanliness and habitability. However since then, little if any money seems to have been spent on maintaining the place. A breakdown of the problems are as follows:
The water - stinks of chemicals and is often brown. The water in other hotels that I have seen in Dili is clean, so this is a hotel problem, not a Dili one. The water heaters are gas-fed and there seems to be no regular check of how much gas is left, resulting in many cold showers.
Cleanliness - There approximately 24 rooms in the hotel and two large passageways to service them. The cleaners use one bucket of water to mop the whole hotel and the floor is usually dirtier after the mop than before it. The mop never seems to be cleaned. The tiles in my shower have not been cleaned in the 18 months that I have been there and the mould has to be seen to be believed.
The food - If you are game enough to eat the food, don't expect much. My last order was Chicken, Nuts and Chilli. It had no nuts and no chilli. I haven't eaten at the hotel for about two months as the kitchen cleanliness has deteriorated. Rats running in the vicinity of the kitchen is a frequent occurance.
The laundry - Clothes come back from the staff-operated laundry in a state that makes me wonder if they actually used any soap powder at all.
Liveability - I have had my toilet back up and flow all over my bathroom twice in the past 18 months. The air conditioner makes loud cracking sounds every 15 minutes making it difficult to get any quality sleep. The water pressure surges every 5 seconds.
Security - The guards are usually alseep on watch.
Apart from the above problems, the Farol is a good place to stay. It's only a 30 minute walk from the centre of town, which is probably its strong point. Fortunately, I've found accommodation elsewhere. Thank goodness I'm leaving.
