We didn't realize Opatija in Croatia would be so crowded on a weekend in late September 2012. We were 'lucky' to find a room at the Hotel Istra..
The room was 103 € at checkout. Parking was about $12 US. The car parks in the hotel were all gone, the only alternative was paring on the street at about $1.00 per hour between 7 am and 10 pm. The ceiling in our room was crumbling onto the carpet, the towels were one step up from paper towels. There was no fridge, The TV, if you could see the picture, was black and white. In the bathroom there were no shampoos. Only a soap dispenser on the wall that required two hands to operate. (The shower head wouldn't hold in the bracket so it was difficult to shower properly).
The 'hot ' meats that were available at breakfast we all cold. Tables in the breakfast room near the windows had 'Reserved' signs in them even though nobody sat at them while we had breakfast.
My advice, book ahead for Opatija and avoid the Hotel Istra.
