I stayed for one, weekday night at the Showboat Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City in February 2008. I booked a "Hot Deal" rate of $49 for a Bourbon Tower Premium room. Upon check in, I was placed in the Orleans Tower. I went back to the desk to ask about being moved to the Bourbon Tower, but the woman said they were full. I find that hard to believe - it was a Tuesday night in late February. This is just another instance of the Showboat not honoring the prices and reservations placed on their website.
The Orleans Tower is the newer tower, though the Bourbon Tower rooms were updated in 2007 and, quite frankly, are much nicer. The Orleans Tower room is a nice room, none the less.
The entrance has a marble tile floor, as does the bathroom. The foyer area also includes a nicely sized closet with a few hangers and ironing equipment.
The quality of the bathroom was impressive. As I said, the floors are marble tile, and the vanity features a nice black marble top with a wooden base. The toilet and shower were in good condition and both got the job done with no complaints. The shower also has marble tile walls with your standard tub base. The walls are decorated with nice framed pictures of Atlantic City from long ago. A small coffee maker, hair dryer, and shaving mirror round out the bathroom.
The room itself was nice, but unspectacular. I stayed in a king room, which in addition to the bed had a table with two living room style chairs, as well as the TV cabinet. The TV cabinet had a few drawers and a mini-fridge in it. The mini-fridge is not to be confused with a mini-bar, though. This fridge is completely empty with no drinks or snacks for sale. Everything was clean with no unsightly stains or tears.
The casino at Showboat is one of the high points, in my opinion. Unlike some of the other Atlantic City casinos, this one is bright and nicely decorated in a Mardi Gras motif. One drawback, I suppose, is that the casino isn't quite as large as what you will find next door at the Taj Mahal or down the boardwalk at Caesar's. Still, it is a nice size with all the gaming options you could ask for. Most of the floor is slot and video poker machines, but all the table games are there, as well. Also included is the House of Blues casino, which has a number of table games and a scattering of slot machines.
As for dining, the hotel features a chophouse, an Italian joint, two smaller cafes, the French Quarter Buffet, and a House of Blues restaurant.
The French Quarter Buffet is a decent option, though it is a bit pricey on weekends and lacks some of the finer choices that really make buffets worth your money. The last time I ate there, shrimp was included only for Diamond Members and the carving station featured only Turkey and Roast Beef. Sorely missing are the crab legs and prime rib that you find at most buffets.
The Mansion Cafe offers a nice breakfast special for $4.99, which includes one egg, home fries, toast, and sausage or bacon. The food there isn't great by any means and, in the busier months, the lines can be out the door. Still, it isn't bad for an on site dining option.
The House of Blues is a favorite of mine. It is no different from any other House of Blues restaurant around.
Shopping is non-existent at the Showboat. There is a small gift shop with various Showboat and Mardi Gras themed apparel, but if you want anything else, you'll have to make the relatively long trek down to Caesar's or the outlets, or stop in next door at the Taj Mahal, which has a small selection of stores.
Parking is free for all Total Rewards members, so that is something to keep in mind when looking for someplace to park in Atlantic City. The hotel also offers a shuttle, which takes you to Harrah's at the Marina, Bally's, and Caesar's.
The pool was right outside my window, but since it was February, I obviously didn't have a chance to use it. From the looks of it, though, it doesn't inspire any confidence. It is quite small - I would say that it is the size of your average backyard, aboveground pool (though this one is NOT an aboveground pool). The pool is shallow throughout and there seems to be a large area around the pool for sunbathing and what not. I would skip it and hit the beach, though.
