I just returned from a spa, gambling and dining weekend at the Borgata. Frankly, I expected a lot more for the money (classic room was a bit over $500 per night including taxes, spa treatments were over $600). I am fortunate enough to frequently stay at 4- and 5- star hotels, regardless of cost, and the Borgata was merely average in feel, amenities and service. I don't think we will be going again.
Contrary to some of the experiences reported here, we had no problems at check in and were given a room right away, several hours before the official check in time. There was only a short line when we arrived, and we were given a choice of a low floor or a high floor. We chose the high floor with a city view. The room had a lovely view, but seemed a bit worn. The room was bright and sunny during the day and had decent lighting at night. However, the furniture was chipped and a bit beaten up, the carpeting had what looked like cigarette burns in it (though this was a non-smoking room) and the grout around the tiles in the shower was a bit stained. I was also a bit disappointed that the TV was an old lunky 27" model instead of a newer one, though I guess that the point of going to the Borgata is hardly to watch TV. Overall, the room seemed a bit tired and shabby, though the bathroom was overall very nice.
We also found a few disturbing housekeeping issues, like raisins and other food from a previous guest under the bed (literally just a few inches from the foot of the bed -- reachable easily with a vacuum) and some stray hairs left behind in the bathroom. I definitely didn't expect that in a hotel of this caliber, but we simply cleaned them up ourselves and moved on. The water pressure in the shower was not the best, but the shower was a really nice size -- big enough for two -- and the water was wonderfully hot. The towels were generously sized and soft. We also found the bed linens to be nice and comfortable and the bed to be quite comfy to sleep in. Moreover, the room was nicer than you might find at a tourist class hotel (though the furnishings were not), but was not nearly as nice as you would typically find at other luxury hotels, such as the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
So -- off to the spa! Overall, our experience at the spa was nice. We had some very nice treatments (body wraps and massages), though mine were not nearly as good as the glowing reviews from my friend would indicate, but the spa was less than the serene experience that I typically enjoy at a high end spa. First, the spa is huge and there are so many clients simultaneously that there are hardly enough seats in the waiting area for everyone either before or in between their treatments. It seemed that the spa booked everyone for treatments that began on the hour, rather than staggering appointments, so everyone wa s sitting around at the same time. Second, the waiting area is right next to the front door to the spa, so it is hardly a hushed, relaxing atmosphere. Women talk loudly to their friends as they walk in and out of the spa, and the receptionist inside the spa itself speaks loudly to women with questions about lockers and the like. That really affected (in a negative way) the atmosphere at the spa. Finally, though we had booked our spa treatments over five weeks before we went, apparently there was a price increase at the spa between booking and our day there and we were charged the higher prices. Now, fortunately for us, the extra $50 was not a huge issue, but the principle of charging us for the increase really bothered me. It just seemed so inappropriate. Had they simply honored the original price from the time of our booking (or had they called or e-mailed to inform us of the price increases), they would have won some loyalty from us for good communication. Moreover, we had merely an average experience at the spa.
We did have a wonderful dinner (American Grille), with outstanding food and great service. We also enjoyed gambling and hanging out at the casino. The gym was fabulous (for $10 a day, though if you go to the spa, the gym is free that day). I was also surprised that the casino and hotel itself did not seem to be constantly cleaned and maintained throughout the night and morning, as many other casino/hotels manage to do. On Sunday morning at about 9 a.m., one of our companions mentioned that the casino smelled like the basement of a fraternity house the night after a big party. He was right! There was garbage strewn throughout the elevators leading up to the hotel rooms and all around the casino floor, and it didn't seem that anyone was doing much about it. I've really never experienced anything like that in a high end casino/hotel -- at least not in Las Vegas.
For my money, next time we will most likely simply fly back to Las Vegas if it's gambling we are looking for, or head to NYC or Philly if we want an activities weekend in a wonderful hotel.
