My wife is a dolphin fanatic. She loves to watch them at any opportunity. I had done my online homework before our recent trip to Atlantic City and found Atlantic City Cruises. They offer several options as far as sightseeing trips, but with my wife's love of the dolphins, I opted for the 2 hour dolphin watch cruise. I only told her about it at the last minute as a special surprise. Brownie points are always nice even after 45 years being together. The dock was an easy drive from Trump Plaza, about 1 1/2 miles. BTW, if you are intimidated by the thought of driving here, don't be. AC is not as huge as you might think and the streets are laid out in an easily followed grid. We arrived at just before noon expecting to find a huge crowd. The lady at the ticket booth said that we were the first, but that the boat was going to be full. Our tickets were reserved online beforehand and cost $29 apiece with our senior discount. While waiting we browsed some shops in the area and had a cool beverage as well. While we waited the boat came back from its previous sightseeing tour and passengers disembarked. We boarded about 15 minutes later and people started to pile on board. At precisely 1:00 PM Captain Jeff George came on board and briefed us on what to expect. It was quite windy that day and the waves were very rough for landlubbers. The captain said that was due to the water being so shallow there. At about 2 1/2 miles out we were in only about 11 feet of water. A huge dredge boat was pumping sand from the bottom and through a massive pipe all the way back to shore. Then it was being spread around to replace the beach sand that Hurricane Sandy had eroded out to sea. Within 5 minutes of being in the area we started seeing dolphins. They were all around us in several groups. Captain Jeff explained that they were feeding on shrimp and other sea creatures which live in the shallow water there. He said that they have been doing this cruise for over 11 years and know the feeding habits very well. That's why they are so comfortable offering their guarantee that if you do not see any dolphins or if you get cancelled due to weather they will give you a free ticket that never expires so as to go again. He said that their success rate was at 94% . All too soon the time to leave had come and we did a turn around and headed for shore. The captain took us on a different route coming back to show us the sand pumping operation and allow us to take some great pictures of the AC skyline. Be sure not to forget your camera as this is the best place to get the entire place in one frame. Be sure to put this cruise on your To Do list. You will be glad you did.
