I had an opportunity to stay at The Chelsea over the weekend, and had a good amount of time to experience the entire property. Here's my list of pros and cons for the hotel. (I go to AC relatively frequently, just to put my review into context).
Pros:
- GREAT renovated room. The hotel, while not incredibly impressive on the outside, provided a wonderful room. The rooms were neo-retro, and very stylistic and CLEAN. The bathroom was also very clean and my room had an edgy standing glass shower. The TV was also nice (HD LCD TV).
- COMFORTABLE bed. The bed was great, and the sheets, again, were CLEAN and new.
-Terrific LOCATION. The hotel was half a block away from the boardwalk, and just a few steps away from the AC Hilton and the Tropicana.
-Great RESTAURANT. I had dinner at the Starr restaurant - Cheslea Prime on the 5th floor. The NY Strip Sirloin was great. My gf is a vegetarian, and the staff was very helpful in creating a veggie dish just for her. The sides were great too and so was the wine.
-Nice AMENETIES. The 5th floor is a "game room" that (aside from the restaurant) included several fireplaces, a nice deck, and also a pool table room (and access to a heated pool). The game room also has board games and is a nice place for the family to gather at night (though the rooms were not well lit, probably for atmosphere purposes)
-CHEAP valet parking. 10 bucks ain't a lot for 24 hour in/out parking.
-Nice and ATTENTIVE staff. Very helpful. From my experience I did not run into any rude staffers, though it may be helpful that I am not rude to them!
Cons:
-My room had an issue with the airconditioning unit. One thing to keep in mind, even though the rooms are redone, the AC units seem to be on the older side, even with the modern climate control features. Everytime the A/C turned out, it sounded like a mechanical explosion that woke me up every 15 minutes. I'm sure not every room is like this, though you might want to check and make sure before you settle in the room that the AC unit is working ok (or bring earplugs to bed)
-Lukewarm shower water during peak hours (of the morning).
-Valet parking is VERY busy during checkout (make sure you alert them early that you want the car before you checkout).
Summary:
Even though the crazy A/C unit is my major individual gripe (and led me to no sleep) - overall I'd definitely recommend this hotel because of its sleek redesign, proximity to key casinos and the boardwalk, the friendly staff, and most importantly - the best bang for the buck in A/C. Honestly, most hotels in AC are either grossly overpriced, and have incredibly dirty rooms - so it was a nice change of pace to visit a hotel there that not only was clean, trendy, but also had a decent restaurant to boot.
