This is my first review on Trip Advisor. I am CEO of a Host Agency which has 2,000 agents. I do not review out of laziness but also since I am generally staying for free on complimentary offers . Casa de Isabella did not have a special travel agent rate as they are still new but they did say they expect to do so in future. Anyway my first review is also one of a paying guest which is also different for me.
I arrived late because of confusion with taxi driver and hotel location. I had no cell phone and do not speak Spanish. He drove me to another part of town called Rodadero not El Centro and we could not find hotel. In the confusion he finally allowed me to use his cell to call the hotel. Why he did not do this earlier I have no idea? Anyway I was so relieved to hear a person speaking English on the other end of the phone. I then quickly passed phone to the driver and he directed the taxi driver to the hotel. I guess as a frequent traveler with my business I am most familiar to large resort settings shuttle services. I tried an eco-spa in Costa Rica this year but airport shuttle was arranged there as it was a 3 hour drive. Anyway I expect the knowledge of location is probably a one time issue. It is about a 15-20 minute drive from the airport and they told me at check-in this was the first time they had a problem. They sincerely apologized when it was not even their fault and this really changed my mood as I felt they were really upset about this part on my trip being ruined. They offered me a drink while checking in. They have a wine bar with a NY lounge feel to it but I decided I just wanted a beer and relax.
Anyway entering this hotel was like walking into another city. Santa Marta is not exactly the resort area one would expect to see in the St Maarten or Aruba as it is a city. I knew this beforehand and had come to do something different. I wanted to explore Tayrona and get certified to scuba dive through a 3 day course. I had pre-arranged tours of Tayrona (Loved it and recommend highly although through private tour guide after looking at some of the buses). Victor said they can arrange all these and made tons of suggestions to other ideas of things to do and most importantly restaurants. My suite was amazing. I must say it was a huge part of my stay and I ended up only doing one day of scuba as I wanted to spend a full day on my terrace. So basically I sacrificed my PADI certification to enjoy more relaxation at the hotel. I can not tell you how much I loved sitting up top hotel and watching the sunset over the marina. It was amazing and I recommend getting a terrace suite. So in summary it was a great trip and a different route than my normal cruise/resort route which I do far too frequently. I also know that my trip would not have been nearly as enjoyable if not for the accommodations and service. I do not know when I will get back to Santa Marta but I will say Casa de Isabella is the only spot I will stay. They also have received my first Trip Advisor review which says a whole lot.
