Just returned from a 4 day-3 night quickie in San Andres at the Sol.
Great tour package prices from San Jose Costa Rica. Just about every CR travel agent has all-inclusive packages for about $ 300 per person, with either TACA or COPA airlines.
Stayed at the Sol Caribe in the center of town. GREAT location for shopping, clubbing, bar hopping, and using the gorgeous public beach just 2 blocks away. Locals are super friendly. the streets are super safe....was out all night walking around with my girlfriend, and there is lots to do and see. Like most of my many stays at Sol Hotels, had a few small problems.
No hot water in our room for the first day (until we damanded a plumbing review) and a bit of hassle with a security person who did not see our guest bracelets. Overall the location and price are good, and you are VERY close, within 5 blocks to everything, including the piers where all the tours leave from.
The best hotel on the Island was obviously the Sunrise, where we spent one
day. Very beautiful resort with top notch food and service, and quality rooms that you would expect from a 4 to 5 star facility. Definately our choice for a hotel and where we will stay in the future.
The tours of Johny Cay and Aquarium Cay were great. Excellent snorkeling, bars, facilities like bathrooms and restaurants/bars are all located on these tiny cays. You can store a backpack while you enjoy the water too.
San Andres IS NOT A LUXURY RESORT. YOu will not find American style Hiltons or Marriots but for those who love the unspoiled beauty and undeveloped atmosphere it is a gem. DO NOT FORGET....You can not drink the tap water here and it is not even recommended to brush your teeth with it..... 1 out of every 5 people seems to get diahrea here.
My favorite highlight on the island is a Colombian women who has been selling her caribean style food on a table at the corner of the public beach
(the corner closest to the Sol Caribe) for 31 years. The food is indredible and we opted to picnic on the beach with this delicious food 3 out of 4 days.
Stuffed crabs for $ 2 US, fresh jumbo shrimp cocktails $ 4 US, Lobster empanadas for $ 2, and pinnapple coconut cake for $ 1 . There is just to much more to list.
I will be returing next month
