We just came back from a 1 week vacation at the Super Decameron Marazul. The weather was fantastic, almost always sunny and when it did rain, it lasted rarely over 20 minutes and then sun again!
The hotel was a bit old but extremely clean. A few easy renovations would make the jump from 3 1/2 star to 4...
Service was exceptional and the staff was always smiling and helpful. Most of them spoke english, even if I found it interesting to try to communicate in spanish.
The very interesting thing is that with the Decameron hotels, you have access to all Decameron hotels on the island, so you are not limited to your own resort, you can make dinner reservations at another Decameron hotel (the grill at the Aquarium is very good), have a drink after a walk downtown at the Los Delphines, stop for a ''bio-break'' at the Maryland, etc...
Most of the activities offered are relatively cheap compared to other destinations. So for around 30$US per person, you can take the bus island tour that is scheduled to be a 3 hour trip but actually lasted about 4 1/4 hours! For about the same price, you can also spend the day at the beach where you are first brought by boat on Haynes Cay where the beach is spectacular (it is a deserted island with only a small snack and drink bar, toilet, and of course gift shop...), you can take a walk around the island in about 20 minutes. Then at around 1 pm, you are brought to El Acuario and Johnny Cay for lunch where you are offered fish or chicken. There, you can do some snorkeling (we actually saw two nurse sharks and half a dozen stingrays!!), until you are brought back to destination at around 3:30 pm. There are a lot of other activities offered at around the same price.
Food was overall very good but neutral ( in an all inclusive, they have to please everyone so they cannot make it too exotic and/or spicy...).
Be careful, upon return, at the airport, they search ALL luggages so don't bother bringing seashells, bits of corral, or sand as they will not let you leave with it.
Another hint, don't bring too much of your own money, you have access downtown to ATM machines that will give you Colombian Pesos. It is always cheaper to pay in pesos (taxi, bus, souvenirs) for example, a taxi ride from the Marazul to downtown will cost either 5$US or 8000 pesos which is actually the equivalent of about 4$US. Your choice!
We spent a wonderful vacation on the island and promised ourself that we would return asap.
