“Sadly isn't a 5 stars hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

For the price you pay you expect getting a a 5 start hotel experience, but you don't. Sadly the Aquarium is the best of the Decameron hotels, but it doesn't have a private beach. Food is ok but not great.

Staff, on the other hand, is very helpful, makes your stay pleasant and strive to make you feel at the best hotel (Darcy, Carlos and Lisseth were great). The first night we assigned a room close to the activity are, and we requested to get a new one. The following date we got the best of the rooms, amazing view, far from noisy areas and on a third floor (just as we requested).

Too bad they no longer offer the inter-hotel bus ride, so you can enjoy all other hotels without having to rent a car.

Room Tip: You may want to get rooms for from the pool area, and with ocean view ;)

I think it is important to report this on Trip Advisor. Decameron hotels are very good and inside it feels secure and comfortable. However, outside it is not as safe as reported to be. I have tried writing to Decameron and had no response. I believe that crime reports are suppressed and the danger is that tourists have a false sense of security. Travelling at slow pace on the roads around the island by golf buggy is very common indeed. Our group, myself, husband and 2 Colombian friends and their 15 month baby rented one from opposite our hotel, the Aquarium. A short distance from the Marazul hotel we had a shocking incident when 2 men ran in front of the golf buggy and robbed us at knife point. We were lucky the moment when the road was traffic free was so short or the outcome may have been much worse. I had a huge machete held to my throat and when I raised my arm to protect myself my camera strap was slashed from my wrist and my camera was stolen. Our friends in the front had a baby and they were terrified for their child. The driver chose to drive the buggy into the bushes to block off one side with the intention of protecting the baby. Their bag was stolen and they were threatened with the knife. It happened very quickly and the men were obviously experienced and waiting for a quiet moment on the road. The police did attend but failed to pursue the men and after a long time at the police station it was clear they were not intending to do anything at all. They would not issue a report and said 'surely you do not want to make us do paperwork just for a theft.' They then seemed rather threatening and our Colombian friends who are lawyers said we should leave immediately. Whilst we were in the police station 2 other similar incidents were taking place, one at the Blowhole, which was where we ourselves had been heading. So please take note and don't use the golf buggies as you are so exposed and vulnerable. And remember insurance claims have to be backed with a police report of the crime - San Andres does not apparently acknowledge that crime is taking place so no chance! The police and the hotel chain have their own reasons for suppressing the information. All I can do is warn other people to take care. It is a beautiful place but not the safe haven it appears to be.

Room Tip: pool area possibly noisy block 12 and 13 are good

The good. Very good hotel, food & drinks, clean rooms, people, fun enterteinment at nights, sea sports. Try to drink Coco-fresa, the special hotel drink. Good pool, water a little cold. All inclusive is great. The sea food restaurant, excellent.

Average. You can swim into the ocean, but the hotel has no beach.

I recommend: A tour to Johhny Cay, and the Aquarium. Beautiful beaches and cristal clear water.

Room Tip: Rooms towards the sea are better to avoid the noise of the late shows and music.

The aquarium hotel is very well localized just near downtown. The towers stay in the water and they have a better nightlife there too. Two of the best restaurants stay there.
If you are looking for something calmer and more comfort, definetly go to Marazul. To take a cab from downtown to Marazul costs about 12 pesos (6 dollares) but it is worth it. The guests can also go to Decameron San Luiz which is facing the beach and also a nice place to visit and spend the day/ Marazul is closer to San Luiz and really close to Rocky Cay (where decameron has a beach restaurant, really nice). San Luiz has one of the best restaurants.
San Andres is not a fancy place. Everything is very simple but very nice. Not ostentatious at all and you feel very comfortable all the time. The cleanliness could improve. The food at the buffet restaurant weren`t as good as the restaurants that you need to make a reservation. Def. go to the beach restaurant called Rocky Cay and order the Cazuela con Aroz de coco. So delicious, like a sea food thick soup with coconut rice!

Don`t bother going to Hoyo Soplador but do go to the natural pools! So beautiful. don`t let the locals take advantage of you and keep your eyes in your belongings. It is a safe place, but like I mentioned it is a very simple town.

The drinks at the decameron`s bar aren`t so great, mostly made with local booze and coconut milk. Still drinkable. Cold beer always.

Wake up early for breakfast so you can have an authentic Colombian coffee with the sun rise! And enjoy the see with the 7 shades of green/blue!

even I heard bad critics about san andres hotels I found this one pretty good, specially because we have a junior suite wich were so spacious for us.
nice food but not the best, nice cocolocos and the best it was that everything was included in the price wich helps you a lot saving money.
wonderful natural sea pool, really amazing, you can stay there the whole week, because the watrer was so clean and warm, safety for kids and plenty of beautiful fishes the ones you can feed with your own hand.
located a few blocks from the downtown and with posibilities to rent golf cars to see the island. great destination.
ahhh the view was so beautiful !!!!!!!

Room Tip: all the rooms have great view but is better the upper floors for the view, but if you go with discap...

A unique all-inclusive resort. The panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea from most rooms is the best on the island. The hotel grounds of the resort and the on-the-water buildings and walkways are amazing, staff is very hard working, and the food was good - mostly fish, chicken, and pork dishes.. with lots of veggie and fruit options (but I don't want to see plantain or coconut for a few months at least). The cleaning staff are amazing and the resort is kept very clean. Our room was cleaned each day and the staff even tidied our messy room after each night of drinking and being lazy! The rooms are simple but nice - and the view makes up for anything they are lacking. The dinner booking process (for a la carte) was the only negative comment I have - you have to line up at 8am and most restaurants are full by 10am. The booking staff were a bit difficult and if you want to do some guided tours in the morning, you miss out on booking dinner each night. They really need to fix that! Despite the terrible dinner booking process, I definitely recommend visiting the entire island and other Decameron resorts. The day trips were a lot of fun (Johnny/Haynes Cay, Submarino, and the Captain Morgan booze-cruise was the best!). San Andres is very relaxing and easy to get around by walking, bus, taxi, or renting a golf cart - the downtown core is a bit hectic for traffic but if you really want to check it out in the day to see everything unbothered, walk around during siesta at 1-3pm - there's nobody around... but nothing open for shopping, either!). Most people speak some English and French but Spanish is mostly spoken. We visited Providencia Island and that was incredible - very quiet and scenic. I'll see you again soon San Andres, Providencia, and Santa Catalina!

Room Tip: If you're a person who wants sea view but view of the pool and entertainment and don't mind...
