Celebrate the New year 2008 at this hotel.
The trip to the hotel is short and funny. Taxi with the open trunk, 5 in the car...
Check-in went smooth. got to pay for the safebox. got a 3rd floor in a tower with oceanview. We were at the opposite side of the construction at the hotel. It did not bother us. Were 4 and got a communicating room.
Rooms smell very bad, same for our clothes after one day in the room. It took all the humidity odour. It's written not to flush paper in the toilet but never saw anyone taking off the garbage in the room, so as many other, we flushed the paper... There is a fridge but they provide only a 5 litres of water because it is not potable. The room is ok but no more than that. No fancy supplies but it is clean. Bed was ok but not that comfy. The tower is not very well "soundproof" at 2h00 am we passively assist in a conflit.
The hotel seems to be old and need a little bit of "love" / paints.
Nolitours consider this place a 3* + or 4* ... we consider the place a 3* or 3*-.
Differently to other destinations, this one give the opportunity to talk with people from other countries (Peru, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica... ). Not only USA and Canada.
Food was good but not excellent. Fruits were absolutely excellent ; got the best mangos and grenadillas there. The new year's Eve evening was ok but no more.
Got a special buffet but not as fancy as other places. Got a music show but the sound was too high and the quality of sound so bad. They served champagne at midnight.
A la carte reservation was a total mess... book 24 hours in advance to your hotel and 48 hours for the other Decameron. The bruja at the Aquarium was the best. Got little problem with the Patio... fish not cook, beef like chewing gum... the waiter was more discourage than us. THe a la carte at the beach club was a bad surprise. We understood it was possible to have lobster which was not the case.
Cigarettes are included... if you dont mind wich brand it is perfect.
Watch out for the show by the pool. Got something like javel on my short... it has been discolored. Show was not impressive.
The hotel is near "downtown". 5 to 10 minutes by foot. Can stop for a drink at Decameron Delfines.
Got a nice dinner at Nikko's beside the hotel. Good service, good lobsters, good atmosphere.
Had a good security feeling at this hotel and on the island.
Snorkeling was cool in the natural pool at the hotel. Just behind the stairs... so much fishes!!! So nice!!
Snorkeling was cool elsewhere. Nice rays... and baby shark further on the small island near the Marazul hotel.
In aquarium, you feel almost like in jail. The fence is easily seen. Because the hotel is over the water, you are force to walk all together on the same trail ... following the leader!
Were lucky not to have water in our room. Dont know if it comes by the roof or what but many travellers got a couple of inches on their floor.
Hot water was not always available for the shower.
All in all, it gives the possibility to visit a part of Colombia safely. Watched 2 minutes of TV and were talking of FARC, terrorists who destroyed a building, violence in colombia... closed the TV and walk safely in san Andres.
Staff: mostly friendly. Smiling, kidding around.. slow services for drinks even if we always tip.
Excursions are available at a very good price. Massages were really cheap. Not the best but for the price it was nice. Horseback riding was not for beginner. The trail was not large with trees on the side of fence... It was my 3rd horse ride and my legs keep memories... Absolutely need long pants... not for the horse itself but for the trail.
Island tour was great because of the guide... beautiful place. THe pirate visit was a trap and a waste of time.
Johnny Cay was great. A real south beach. Need to take the boat... and good luck to get off and get inn the boat. Need to jump in jump off while the boat moves with the waves.
Eco-tour was good either with the Coast Guard got us. The guide was stressed... he asked us to put the flotation belt... but too late. Finally the Guards were unhappy because the boat was going into the mangroves. They finally accept to let us go with no problem for us (who knows what happen later for the guide...). It was a nice contradiction because few minutes ago the guide was so "sad" because nobody take care of the reefs and natural sites even if the island is part of the UNESCO...
San andres is considere a safe place but... there is a jail with more than 200 people from steal to murder. Can visit the rastas only with a local and with no values. Leaving the Rocky Cay by night, the security guide of Decameron insist to come with us to stop a taxi by the road. He insist and was shy to say the place is not that safe. Saw many polices, army guys, security... the maximum we saw was on january the 1st for the new government. Someone report two fights on the beach downtown. 2 girls and 2 men with knives. Even with all those warnings, we consider this place a safe one.
San Andres do not offer many beaches... but the ocean there is so nice. The approach is not always nice but once in the water.... it is an other thing.
Shopping was very cheap there (cigarettes, alcool, shirts, jewels, CD's... ).
Consider myself lucky for the trip but would not go back.
