“Clean, friendly, comfortable hotel in a GREAT location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2009

Hotel Portobelo Plaza was lovely - simple, not fancy or luxurious, but exactly what my group needed to make for a very comfortable stay on San Andres. The staff was extremely friendly and accomodating for my group, which tracked in mud and cement each day after a day of exhausting construction work. The owner Carlos did everything he could to make our stay pleasant, and the delightful wait staff had smiles every day, even with our countless requests for water or mojitos! Food was great, always a very filling meal, and mmmmm, arepas every morning! **Air conditioning remotes are available if you ask nicely, not sure why reviewer above had difficulty getting one. Internet availability was a little spotty in the restaurant, but it is a developing country, I don't expect 24/7 access.

It was the second time for us in San Andres island, and our first in this hotel. The location is perfect as it is close to all the restaurants and stores. We booked a single room and asked for a queen size bed, as i was traveling with my spouse. Well, we got twin beds instead. Asked to be changed, but they said they didnt have any more rooms available. Another thing we didnt find useful was the fact that they had no remote control for the ac in the room. If you wanted to make any change, like turn it off, make it cooler or warmer, you had to call reception and asked them to do so. Annoying thing, considering you wake up in the middle of the night and have to pick up the phone to do so. The bathroom was really small, you can barely close the door. The water had this really bad smell, they said it was because of the filters, but it really smells. Oh, and be prepared so there´s no hot water at any time. Our first time in the island we booked in Casablanca Hotel, and boy, it is a palace compared to this one. I´d come back to the portobelo only if there´s nothing else available

Hello

We made our reservation only a couple weeks before our Christmas vacation and this was the only hotel with space available. Now we understand why.

We go to this island to scuba dive. This hotel only starts to serve breakfast at 8am which is too late to be practical for scuba diving. The hotel owner, Carlos, promised the owner of the Karabik dive shop that breakfast would be available to divers at 7:30am but we could never even get coffee in time to dive. The hotel owner was very slippery on this subject.

Also, the web site for this hotel promises internet access. Don't waste your time trying. Carlos again had a long story about how if we contacted him directly we could arrange to borrow a special router and perhaps connect to the internet for an hour. It was all a big story.

Another thing, the hotel charged our Visa card for the full stay when we made the reservation. That was more than two weeks before we arrived. That made us very uncomfortable and is not customary at any other hotel where we have stayed, even in Colombia.

It was too bad about the internet and breakfast. The front desk and cleaning staff were very efficient and kind.

Pete
