We had an amazing experience at Sirius hotel. The hotel is charming on a gorgeous beach, and the people who work there are the warmest, most wonderful people i have met on my travels.
There have been some bad reviews on this hotel, but i feel that these people are coming to the Providencia expecting 5 star sheratons on the beach. The first thing that you need to understand is that the place is not developed yet (and hopefully never) and this is what makes the island and truly unique diamond in the rough. The island is stunning, where you can walk along the beach without another person on it, where you get a seafood platter of fresh fresh seafood for $10US equivalent, where the people live off the land and where you walk the streets at night to see the locals sitting on chairs in the middle of the road watching a small TV in the local convenience store.... This place has been described as a Carribean island of the 1950's. I have travelled extensively, and this truly was one of the most amazing, unique, beautiful places i have ever been to.
The hotel was fantastic. We had booked one of the Suites and it was worth every dollar. Alot of the rooms in other hotels were a bit pokey and dark. This one ahd gorgeous big doors that opened onto a balcony with a hammock overlooking the beach. The bed was seriously THE BIGGEST bed every, covered in pillows and it is a massive room with aircon which is evey efficient, fridge (very handy when you run up to the local store), and even a plasma TV. There isn't any hot water. But, that happens to be on a lot of the island, and secondly - it's 35'c, what do you need it for???
The breakfast is a simple yet interesting affair. Two of the loveliest locals you will ever meet prepare the breakfast and do the cleaning in the place. Breakfast consists of beautiful fresh breads and Jams, an interesting local juice, coffee and eggs- anyway you want them. The hotel is small yet busy with lots of interesting people to meet.
Paulino the hotel manager is one of the nicest men you can ever meet. We sat and had a chat every day about all things, which i loved as i really wanted to improve my spanish! the only person i've met in the whole of south america to have the patience to open google translator to help! Nothing is a problem for Paulino.... nothing at all. You need something, he makes a call, next thing you know it is outside your room! A wonderful hotel manager, not formal, just relaxed and friendly.
The diving is wonderful, the sites are great and the crew at Sirius dive centre are a lot of fun. If you are a diver, this place is great is you decide on the day you want a dive, then you just wander down and go for one. you never leave on time, but then i never wore a watch there so who cares?
In the end we were supposed to stay 5 days and stayed for 12. It was wonderful for relaxation - i even noticed my health condition improve while i was there!!!
Bottom line, Sirius becomes your home. If relaxation is what your after, a charming little, clean hotel with a friendly "Mi casa su casa" environment and staff that will do anything for you, definitely go here. And when you do go - don't tell too many friends - we don't want to ruin this prestine travellers secret! :)
Pay the little extra for one of the suites - they are worth every dollar, massive rooms with everyth...
