“Great place to visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013

We have spent many nights there over the past 5 or 6 years. On our most recent visit, we spent two nights at the Empress Hotel in Asbury park, New Jersey in August (for our 2nd wedding anniversary) and it was just a perfect weekend located about 50 yards from the world famous Asbury Park boardwalk and beach on the Atlantic Ocean. The Empress hotel/resort offers a fantastic hotel, gay and gay-friendly nightclub known as Paradise (and it is), the Tabu restaurant where you can get awesome appetizers, a great burger or the best turkey club around Asbury and many other options. The rooms were clean (above average), everything is always in working order, A/C was comfy, so were the beds and the rooms are beautifully appointed with the west side of the hotel facing the large pool and Tiki bars where on summer Sundays the best (and possibly the only) gay Tea-dance on the Jersey shore with the owner (Shep Pettibone) as DJ for the event on most Sundays. We really enjoy dancing as the sun sets. The east side rooms are directed toward the ocean on the upper floors, although the boardwalk and beach are fully visible from any room even with the restaurants and shops across the street. The maid service is excellent and really unobtrusive. You can go out for an hour for breakfast and come back to a spotless room. They even have some pet-friendly rooms for dogs (who do not bark a lot lol). We have been taking our dog Buddie there for a while now. The Empress staff is among the friendliest and most accommodating we have ever come across. When we checked in, we felt as if we came home for a family visit. We can’t wait to go back again for my birthday weekend. Sincerely, Michael, Gerard and Buddie!!!

Room Tip: Upper floors have the best view of the ocean and boardwalk on the east side of hotel. Awesome view...

Michael, Gerard and Buddie,

We are so happy that you decided to spend your special weekend with us. You have been a pleasure from the beginning and we hope you will continue to make the Empress your home away from home for many years. It is couples like you that make working in the service industry a breeze and it doesn't hurt that you have a great dog.....

Kind regards,

Kristin and Staff

We have stayed in B&B on the shore, in Ocean Grove. Since all the damage was done on the pier there, so we moved over to Asbury Park area.Read alot of mixed reviews about the Empress, but the bottom line is, its not bad.Lets start by saying its not a 4 or 5 star Hotel. Its clean, maybe a little past its prime, and a great location. Yes, you may have a slightly obstructed view of the ocean, get a higher floor, but its as close as you can get. Nice restaurants just feet away. We did go on a Mon. night in Sept., so things were quiet. I heard the Hotel may get a little loud, also keep in its a popular Gay Hotel, and the restaurant Cubana across the street has an upper outside area, that may also have music. Over all, its way better than a motel, clean, friendly, and did the job. Just don't go in thinking its the Ritz or a sleazy Hotel.

Room Tip: All rooms have Ocean View, Higher level has better view. Room 430 was a King. Also all have balconie...

I've stayed at ocean front hotels on the east US coast for 40 years. The jersey shore boardwalk towns in general are much loudness, and cigarette butts. The Empress was a welcome exception. Immaculate rooms, comfy new beds, great view. All at a super competitive price. Right next to the famous Stone Pony. Near great restaurants, not crappy boardwalk greasepits. Free off street parking and nice continental breakfast included too.

Asbury is back and getting better each season. If you remember the Empress from decades ago...forget it. The Queen is back and she is clean and proud and out loud! This is not a sleepy hotel and right across from all of the action. The rooms are clean and well appointed and the service is friendly and attentive. This is not a luxury hotel and does not cater to families. It's gay and great and would recommend to anyone wanting to stay near the action....rock and roll or disco....pool or ocean...boardwalk food or fancy dining...its all there and getting better.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are facing the beach/boardwalk so like all Ocean Ave rooms, a great perch to watch...

This hotel is geared towards the LGBT community on specific time periods. Stayed during past weekend which was a blast as expected. One day of partying is all I needed and than I switched gears towards relaxation. You will hear music when pool party or club is open. Good news in Jersey that shuts down on weekends at 2am. This is my second visit and I will say that the hotel is much more clean. New additions of talent I believe at front desk make it very pleasant and professional. Even HK staff seemed very one point. Listen during the holidays it is tough from a service standpoint and the staff really came through!!! Kudos to all of them. There is no easy way to park your car but that is expected. Asbury Park continues to improve on dining experiences and overall activities such as bikes. I will be back in the Fall to just relax. In the Fall I will stay in Ocean the neighboring township. Extremely quaint bed and breakfast options with the goal relaxation:-)

Thank you so much for the positive feedback from your recent stay. We try to keep up on the cleaning and maintenance around the building as well as doing some upgrades. Its nice to hear its working and that people are noticing. We try to make sure everyone has a great stay here and paradise's parties do help people to unwind and relax out by the pool. Hopefully parking will get better around here, but yes it is a bit of a pain sometimes especially during holiday weekends. Please think of us when you are making future bookings and we hope to see you soon.

I've stayed here since 2008 and really enjoyed my stay every time! All the amenities you need in the room including safe, coffee maker, microwave, & refrigerator! My corner room on second floor(non-smoking flr) had ocean view and Stone Pony view of outdoor concerts! Although I tried Ocean Grove this year, I went to the Empress pool for sun, swimming and reading. Great food, too!

Despite the great location right across from the boardwalk, our experience didn't seem worth the extra money for a "beachfront" hotel. We chose The Empress for a last-minute weekend trip, without doing much research, and found everything to be just 'eh.' The hallways reeked of smoke, we could hear every conversation happening on both sides of our room, and even though we requested a queen or king bed (being a couple), they couldn't accommodate.

On Sunday night, we were bummed to find out the club was closed, and so was the restaurant. The bar was still open, and the bartender was helpful, letting us know the drink specials... But then we experienced an awkward encounter with the karaoke DJ that basically ruined the night. In general the staff was friendly, i.e. happily holding our luggage for us after checked out, but overall, the service was subpar. We tried to call the front desk several times from the hotel phone (to request a later check-out), and they never even picked up.

In the past we've really enjoyed taking day trips to Asbury Park -- the boardwalk snacks, "Yappy Hour" at Wonderbar, the laidback NJ crowd. Next time around, if we decide to stay the night, I'll take the extra 15 minutes to look into the other options, besides a hotel that's coasting on its highly visible sign, and not much else.
