I just want to start this review off by saying that I was born and raised Cuban..therefore, when I say that this is great "Cuban-inspired" food, that's definitely what it is.
I came to Cubacan to celebrate my 25th birthday (I also came here to celebrate my 24th) and I will probably come back again next year! The atmosphere is very "tropical-meets-sophisticated" and the lighting is dim. Which I actually love. It's right on the Asbury Park boardwalk, so you get a great view of the ocean and, in the summer, the passers-by.
Starting off with the appetizers, they do have a great selection. Not ALL the appetizers are Cuban food...which may be great for some people. For instance, there was a cheese platter (which actually looked really good...I saw the table next to us get it) and they had burger sliders (which we did order...and were amazing). We also ordered the empanadas which come in either chicken or pork...both were very good! The bread they bring to the table is good...although it isn't Cuban bread. They give you a mango butter which is out of this world!
The entrees were very good! My brother got the fried steak...which he said was great, my boyfriend got the special (scallops) which he said were amazing (which is really saying something cause he's picky), and I had the ropa vieja. My meal was really good! The only thing is that I ordered the Yuca as a side...and it was very dry. I would just suggest topping it with garlic sauce.
I had the chocolate cake dessert and it was really good!
ALSO- try the pineapple mojito...it was so good!!
All in all, this was a GREAT birthday dinner and I will definitely come back soon!
