“A late review. Excellent hotel and staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

I actually stayed at this hotel in February of 2011...I booked through Expedia when they were running a special on . This hotel is located in the Poblado area up a fairly steep hill. The rooms were nice and modern. I stayed on the 8th or 9th floor. Noise level was very good and the bed was comfortable. In the morning they have a huge breakfast buffett that was included in the room price. Almost everything you can imagine to eat. I was there for 5 or 6 nights. On my last day in town I got a stomach virus. I went downstairs to ask how I could find a doctor. The front desk clerk told me that they have a doctor that they use for the hotel and they would contact them.....and that there would be no charge for the service. Within an hour a doctor shows up at my room and gives me an examination. He gives me a shot of antibiotics and a prescription for more to get at the pharmacy. Didn't cost a penny. Overall I was very impressed with the staff and hotel. I highly recommend this place. Professional from top to bottom.

So its true. Comombians are passionate about being the best they can be and offering it to the guests. I can say nothing else after such great service from the moment one enters the hotel. A very clean property and staff are very helpful. The rooms are spacious and they almost feel like home away from home. The breakfast is authentic and if you are not a breakfast person, its worth tasting something local off the buffet.

The Poblado Alejandria is located in the Poblado commune - which is one of the 16 communes the city of Medellin has.

How to get there when arriving by air?
With a very few exceptions, most of the airlines go to the José María Cordova airport which is 30-45 minutes away from the city of Medellin.
You can either take a bus ("colectivo") - which costs $7500 (aprox. USD 5.50) which makes several stops - and ends in center.
I got off at San Diego and took a taxi ($ 9000) from there to the hotel.
Or you take a taxi at the airport that takes you directly to the hotel $60000 (aprox. USD 35).

Be careful when you look for hotels on google-maps!
Their location is often incorrect. Follow the address!!!

The hotel is in a quiet area - about 800 meters from the Oviedo and Santa Fé shopping centers where you find also a large number of eating options.
A nice walk - maybe a bit rising on the way back.

Check in was quick and efficient and I´ve found all the staff very helpful and friendly.
A friendlyness, education and service that I had experienced about 10 to 15 years ago almost "everywhere" throughout Colombia.

The room was nice, clean, spacious and made for travellers´ needs: lots of practical details that a traveller considers as granted:
A practical closet with hangers; drawers where shirts fit in; a deposit-box big enough for laptops/cameras; a filled minibar - although items are highly overpriced!

A large and comfortable bed.
A clean wooden floor - NO carpet!
A nice bathroom with working showers and towels.

Internet: WIFI, free of charge. Stable and fast - with speeds of around 8Mbps.

Breakfast is offered as a buffet and has fruits, natural juices, breads, joghurts, cheeses etc. etc.
A good selection of quality and fresh foods.
The breakfast/restaurant covers an outside area as well and having breakfast in the city of external spring outside is a nice start into a fresh day.

The hotel amenities (Spa sky with gym, steambath, jaczuzzi, solarium) were disappointing and not up to the other standards of this hotel:

The gym would be better called "exercise room" with one treadmill and exercise bike as well as a broken workout-bench.

The jacuzzis had no water - maybe due to the rain;
The steam-bath was off; the area is very small; one shower only - no lockers.

The view from the upper floor where the services are located, is very nice.

The hotel is recommendable:
very good value for money;all services you need when you´re travelling for business.

Just the minibar is highly overpriced and the services (gym, jacuzzi...) are not as bloomy as their description on the websites.

Like another reviewer who writes on this page, it pains me to categorise an hotel based on the behaviour of one member of staff, but when that person is the individual doing your check-out from the premises, and when that person is the (and I mean *the*) most singularly aggressive, rude, ill-mannered and unsmiling person whom you have met in the whole of Antioquia (a department rightly famed for its fabulously friendly residents), and when that person tries to overcharge you, well, you leave feeling very, very, very unhappy, and that informs your view of the hotel.

I have to say that all other staff on reception and in all other parts of the hotel were supremely friendly, as I had found to be the case during my previous visits.

However, as another reviewer notes, this friendliness unfortunately doesn't make up for incompetence. Let's see a few examples: 1) A group of some six of us are eating dinner at the hotel; as each guest finishes, the waiter comes up and takes away the plate. No kidding! Where *on earth* did they learn this? Here in Europe this is absolutely the hugest possible no-no. Waiting staff just do not ever (ever!) remove a single plate from the table before *all* diners have finished or have indicated that they have finished eating. In France you'd probably be beheaded for this behaviour, and even here in the UK you'd get a warning from your employer and glares from customers. And as if that weren't enough, while I'm still eating my main course, the waiter brings in the DESSERTS for my colleagues! Nooooo! Luckily my pals had more manners than the waiter and waited for me to finish. But what on earth is going on? This staff member needs some serious training. 2) Breakfast service is a shambles! One morning there were only two visible serving staff at the tables, and the buttons and the receptionist were helping out! There was a mad coming and going of all sorts of people as this pair also rushed to attend to the reception desk and guests with cases and bags! 3) Breakfast service in general is hopeless! Super friendly, it has to be said, but friendliness can't compensate for never getting any tea or coffee, having to wait for hours for staff to appear, failing to find them when you go up to the bar and kitchen area on a search quest because you've been waiting for quarter of an hour and nobody's come to offer you any drinks. 4) At breakfast (again) noticing that people who came down after you get their omelette or eggs before you -- even though you ordered the minute you got to the breakfast room because you're in a hurry to get to work. 5) The waiters forgetting to bring e.g. bread, salt, oil to the table at dinner.

The other problem with the breakfast is that it's the same every single day of the week -- except when they don't actually have something (many days they had run out of various items at breakfast time). In fact, having stayed here twice before, I can safely assure that it is the same every day of the century!

C'mon Poblado Alejandria; you can't afford for this atrocious service to mar your hotel like this. I was very happy to return to this accommodation again this year but, given the appalling customer service and the parting shot by that ghastly person on reception, as well as the other hotel options in the city and their practicality in terms of closeness to the Metro or the place I have to go to work, I think it's likely that next year I'll stay somewhere else.

Medellin impressed me so much in September 2011 that made sure to return on business in 2012. It was an easy choice to stay in the Poblado Alejandría again. Room prices remain a good value, and the facilities all are in excellent condition.

I can confirm earlier observations about the hotel's distance from surrounding businesses. It's perfectly safe to walk ten or fifteen minutes to the commercial area down the hill, but the steep climb back will test everyone's fitness. The advantage of this location is peace and quiet, which makes it possible to sleep with windows open to enjoy pleasant evening breezes.

My colleagues and I found it very convenient to take a taxi from the hotel to the Aguacatala Metro station for travel elsewhere in the city. The fare always was under 6000 COP, and the Metro was much faster and more comfortable than sitting in Medellín's torturous traffic.

The level of service seems to have dropped since last year. The hotel restaurant serves a generous breakfast (yes, the buffet is the same every morning) and mid-day and evening meals are very satisfying, too. Unfortunately, the service was spotty and chaotic, with some staff members covering the front desk, door, and a few tables all at the same time. Some servers seemed a bit befuddled about details like bringing coffee along with the clean cup that they set on your table. That said, the employees are invariably polite and friendly, especially if you tell them how much you are enjoying your visit to Medellín--which is easy to do. They work to help guests in all reasonable ways, but enthusiasm does not always make up for poor attention to details.

In the future, I'll still return in hopes that management can work out the kinks that have developed since 2011.

I enjoyed my stay at the hotel, the staff was very helpful and the bed war very comfortable and the view was fabulous,
My only concern is about Medellin itself. The air pollution is very serious. I had to cut my trip short to Medellin due to the contaminated air which has made the city of eternal spring into the city of soot and smoke and burning eyes. If you suffer from any upper respiratory health problems this city is absolutely not for you. There is nothing sweet about the air in this town. I pray that the government and city council figure out a way to clean up the air in this town, Unfortunatly I most certainly will not return to Medellin until they figure out a way to make this town a healthy place to visit.

Room Tip: Request a high floor if possible.

I really don't like when due to one person, you can get a bitter experience, well, that was my experience with "poblado alejandria", the hotel is nice, clean and has all the services, the only downside is that you got to take a cab all the time to the nearest place or either take a 15 min walk, I mean not bad, but things are not around the corner, it is a very safe neighborhood though. But the person that did my check out was just awful, this person was trying to charge me for things that I didn't consume and phone calls I didn't do, and on the top rude. So my only recommendation is to those who are planning to book here,... pls. check your check out bill thoroughly, if you sign carelessly you may have one or two surprises afterwards when you check your invoice.

Room Tip: I had no problems with the room
