“seems outmoded, but grows on you”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

My first impression was that the Poblado Plaza had known better days; it still retains an air of past elegance. But by modern hotel standards, the furniture, the toilet and a few other things, now appear a bit outdated. However, by breakfast the next morning I had already adapted to the Poblado's quaint charm. The hotel is set in a valley surrounded by large green mountains and on the top floors there is a view of the Poblado area of the city; a safe location of Medellin, with large, excellent shopping malls, a very large bookshop (which I loved), banks , good restaurants, and other urban facilities. My room was clean with a large comfy bed and flat cable tv., where unfortunately few international channels are available. The reception staff were all smiles, as was the chef and waitresses in the restaurant with its charming outdoor garden, where there is a plentiful buffet serving delicious Colombian breakfast. There are many things to enjoy in Medellin, in my opinion one of the finer cities in the world, in spite of the unfortunate reputation that past drug-related violence have created for it. This includes exciting tourist sights, locals that are civil (something I have come to treasure in my travels), as well as very good looking and vibrant teens. A knowledge of Spanish is an advantage, especially when visiting cultural attractions such as the Botero Museum.

Room Tip: look for a quiet room on the top floors

The rooms were nice enough but there is only small elevator for the whole building - lots of waiting. The restaurant staff were not very friendly but the restaurant itself has a lovely setting with the small garden and ponds outside and breakfast was good, but not exceptional. There are not many other restaurants close by and it s quite a long walk to the Metro. The reason for giving this hotel a down grade was that on checking out we were charged an extra aprrox $10 each for health insurance! We neither wanted nor needed their insurance and it had not been mentioned when we checked in and they insisted that we pay.

This hotel does not have concierge, no one who works there knows anything, the front desk staff avoid to look at you so you wont ask questions. The bathrooms are dirty, broken windows in the room and I can go further detailing but it's not worth it. This is a 3 1/2 stars hotel. Now, for this category I would consider to stay simply because it's well located, it's a safe area, it has good breakfast, however the arepas are not good, the Venezuelan arepas are better! The internet is sometimes reliable, the door staff are very nice and expresso is not included in your breakfast they charge you for it, so if you like expressos go to Juan Valdez and pay for their expresso since it is twice better than this hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms need a lot of work and up date, so any thing would not make any difference

Positives:
Very good location (close to the shopping centres, restaurants, casinos). Complimentary drinks on arrival. Fair breakfast variation (as for a 5* hotel). Internet connection in the rooms. Breakfast served outdoor.

Negatives:
We booked two rooms; both were very dirty. In our room, there was fungus in the bathroom. The hotel itself requires major renovation. It is very old-fashioned and dirty (stains on the carpets, tables and towels). There were not enough tables for all guests during breakfast.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the higher floors (much better views).

The Poblado Plaza is located in a "safe" area, with Hard Rock Cafe, Mc Donalds etc close bye. The hotel is clean, delicate, but not "stunning" in any way. Just a very decent, effective and comfortable hotel, and with great value. The outside bar and restaurant area is a small green haven, and it was absolutely WONDERFUL to wind down out there with a ice cold beer (yes, frosted glass) and some very nice food. Rooms were spaceous and comfortable, nice beds ensured a good nights sleep. Recommended.

Hotel Poblado Plaza is a mid size hotel in a very good location, right next to 2 malls, cinemas, restaurants etc. There is also a Mc. Donalds directly next door. I stayed at their other hotel (Poblado Alejandria) before but I found that one a bit too far away, reason why I decided to try the Poblado Plaza. Strong points: location, very friendly service, especially front desk, nice breakfast area, rooms are not small and they are kind of cozy with a seperate seating area etc. On the downside I would mention that the internet service was not consistently good. Also, although the breakfast buffet is extensive (and included in the price), there was not much variation. For the 4 days we stayed there it was okay, but I imagine if one stays longer it could get a bit stale. Other downsides I found the lack of ice machines (one has to ask for ice at the bar) and the lack of say a coffee maker or even water heater for a cup of tea at night. Although the room itself was quite clean, the bathroom could have been cleaner (there were some stray hairs here and there). I found they were like stingy with towels (just 2) and they did not put new soap everyday but seemed to assume you would use the old soap (this I do anyways as I hate to waste, but I found it a bit strange they just assumed and did not put new soap). But all in all it's a very decent hotel in a very good location and I would certainly recommend it.

This is not the newest nor the fanciest of hotels, but extremely efficient for business needs.
I stayed here a few nights and I was very pleased with the service and what was at hand.

There is excellent internet service in rooms and lobby. Also a small "business center" on every floor.

Super location in the city.

If you are looking for clean and extremely adequate place to stay, I would certainly recommend this hotel.

This is where I will choose to stay in Medellin for business trips.
