After a pretty good recommendation from a friend, we headed to Cass Kiwi for what I expected to be a minimum of 4 or 5 nights. My first impression of the place was great. The facilities are all there, and it seemed quite comfortable. There are the different decks with hammocks and a small pool on the rooftop. Bar in the lobby with pool table and all on a quiet street with small grocery store across the street, small cafes lining the roadway...close to zona rosa as well.
The room was well priced - meaning on the higher end of hostals in the country. 80,000 for a private for 2 ppl - but it was a nice one....one of the better Ive stayed in thus far.
However, the people do make the place.......by the time midnight came around that evening we had decided to leave the following morning. I dont thingk we could have felt more uncomfortable. Both the staff and other guests were cold, seeming rude or could basically care less. I didnt speak with any other travellers, and as it appeared most were not even travelling OR locals travelling, not sure. They review this as a party hostel - which is certainly fine with me - at least that means social. BUT, if you werent in the clique - or whatever was going on there - you were invisible. Casa Kiwi couldnt feel further from a homley comfortable place.....it was cold and will go down as one of the biggest hostal disappointments Ive had in recent memory. It was so bad, that it actually did a wonderful job of spoiling my overall thoughts of Medellin in general. For a hostal to do that it must not be anything its cracked up to be. We checked out the following morning with not evev a bat of an eye from the desk clerk........I think they gather this might be the case with alot of people.....either that or they dont care - which is probably more of the case.
Dont even bother....and we paid for one of the best ones available.
