If you´ve ever spent any time in East London, or most parts of Brooklyn, you´ll be used to that feeling of not being cool enough, right? All the girls are wearing romper suits and all the guys wearing thick-frame glasses and suspenders, rocking their awesome moustache... That´s kind of how I felt about Casa Kiwi.
The staff just were not interested whatsoever. They are so cool and so into one another, you really are just an annoyance. It´s a fairly substantial hostel in size; one we were never shown around, offered any towels, advice, maps... You get the picture.
And it´s a shame, because it could be pretty nice. They´ve clearly spent a lot of money on the decking and bar area, both of which are nice if you can find a seat. The bar does have lovely locally brewed beers on draft (if you´ve been travelling through SA for a while, you´ll know how rare it is to find a good beer!) but again, the bar-tender is a bit too ace to acknowledge you while you wait for your drink.
Similarly, they seem to have spent a lot of time and energy on the front of the hostel, and then let the rooms / bathrooms all fall a bit behind. We stayed in a private room, no bathroom, with chipped paint, windows that don´t close and the wifi signal died about ten feet further up the hall.
The shower was at least hot though and it´s a fairly decent location. Just a real shame the staff are so far up their own behinds.
