We arrived at Cartagena on a cruise in early November. The temperatures were exceeding 100F! So be prepared with water, sunscreen and a good hat! We easily left the cruise ship and booked a taxi for the day, negotiating a drop off/pick-up time and spot at the walled city. Once there, a guide took us for a 1.5 hour walking tour where we thoroughly enjoyed a history and architectural lesson. Also stopped by to see an emerald workshop. There were washroom facilities in several places we say and a convenience store so we could buy more water and a snack.
We were travelling with a large family group of young (less than 10) and not so young (seniors) . In our opinion, Cartagena's Walled City was quite safe. A few street vendors stopped us on the tour to see their wares but this is no different than many other cities.
We had hoped to do a horse drawn tour of the city and saw these groups periodically throughout the morning. That also looked like a good opportunity to explore.
