“Good hostel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

I stayed in the twin room, Air conditioning was working ok and bed really good, spacious, no hot water but don't need it if you don't use the AC at max. No window in the room. Could check out the balcony in the single room and looked very nice, and the dorm seemed good. The last floor terrace is cool. Wi-Fi didn't work in the room but the rest of the hostel did... bummer. The staff was very nice and helpful.

The hostel is really good located, in the center of the wall city, good for site seen and night life. Just beside the best restaurants, shops and bars of Cartagena. No food and no restaurant in the hostel, but there is a supermarket an all the restaurants you want at walking distance.

Easy to find, good location and the price is right, except for the late checkout cost. Didn't hear any noises from the other rooms or from the street, no noise at all day or night.

If you’re planning to be there is a wile site seen is a good plays to stay, I recommend it for all type of travelers. Hope this helps and have a good trip.

Room Tip: the balcony room looks the best the twin is a good room

We stayed at this boutique hostel for 3 nights in one of the private rooms. The room was spacious and clean with comfortable beds. This mid-priced hostel is in an excellent location, right inside the old walled city. In the morning, they have coffee and tea available and they gave us a good recommendation for breakfast. Just a short walk from the hostel is Loncheria Bolivar, where you can get a good breakfast. You have to try one of their many fruit juices!

We did experience quite a bit of noise at night when we stayed at this hostel. We stayed in the superior double room with balcony and the room right above this one does not have walls. Early one morning two ladies that were staying above us were talking loudly, which woke us up.
Also, one of the nicest hotels in Cartagena is next to the Calamari Hostal and we were "lucky" that for the nights we were there, they were having special events with live music outside. On one hand, the music was fantastic, but it didn't stop until 2 or 3 am. Of course the Calamari has no control over this, and they were very apologetic. Apparently these events don't happen often.
The staff were all very friendly, however when we asked for dinner recommendations they usually referred us to the two plazas, which can be overpriced and touristy. It would be nice if they could recommend a few other choices.
Overall, this is a nice place to stay. Ask for one of the back rooms, which are probably quieter.

The hotel is conveniently located inside the walled city, right off Plaza de la aduana, and a short walk away from Puerta del reloj. The staff is very nice and helpful.
The interior is pirate-themed and the view from the rooftop terrace is fantastic - Bocagrande, the beach and the cathedral!
The room I stayed in had no windows (understandable, given the humid heat of Cartagena, but it felt as if I were staying in a dungeon), the air conditioning did not seem to be working properly and there was no air in the room. On top of that, there was an automatic air freshener in the room, dispensing a disgusting smell every 5 minutes or so. Avoid this room if you can. The dorm room, which had windows, looked much nicer.

Calamari is a great hostel, with excellent value for money, so much so that
we went back there a second time after a break to stay at a resort on the
Rosario Islands. In our opinion, Calamari, was a much better hotel than the
resort we stayed at, which cost five times as much.

The staff in Calamari are extremely helpful. They helped us book our next
hotel, using their own phones when necessary, gave us great recommendations
for dinner and even changed our reservation to a different day when we
asked, at no extra cost. The rooms are cute, rustic and comfortable, with
air conditioning, a flat screen TV and private bathroom (although cold
water showers only). We stayed in both a couples room and the family room
with more a double and three single beds, and really enjoyed both rooms and
their character. There's also a terrace on top which is nice. The location
is great, it's right in the old city, very close to the wall and a
fantastic cafe on top of the wall, and everything in the old city is within
walking distance. All in all, we would definitely stay here again and would
recommend it to anyone.

Switching to the Calamari made my stay in Cartagena so much better. It is a charming botique hostel with private rooms on the first 2 floors and a dormitory on the top floor. I stayed in the dormitory for 5 nights. It is clean and the staff are friendly. They provide you with a trunk and lock and a towel. There is no kitchen, but there is a refrigerator and microwave in the dormitory. The rooftop terrace is a comfortable common space with a pretty view. They were flexible and allowed me to switch my days around after an overnight tour that I had booked fell through at the last minute. If you are traveling on a budget, but prefer to avoid the loud, overcrowded backpacker hostels, I recommend you stop by the calamari. But, hurry, there are only 8 beds in the dormitory.

I stayed in this hostel for a couple of days in one of the independent rooms. They were very clean and the decoration is unique! With good AC because the climate in the city is very tropical and humid.
The staff is great, always willing to help and it is very conveniently located. Walking distance to best bars and clubs of the city; a variety of restaurants of all prices and also to the historic monuments.
They have nice recommendations for tours. I will definitely recommend this hostel!
