“AWESOME package and deal by decameron! you get your moneys worth here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

cartagena colombia is a historical antique city with horse carriages and narrow streets and alot of culture built into the city. infact i have traveled all over colombia and i would def. say that cartagena and san andres island are the only two places i would walk at day and night and not have to look back worrying about any dangers.

its also the perfect romantic getaway for all budgets.

i reccomend this decameron hotel because of the excellent service, excellent food, excellent animation team, acitivities, people and location of hotel is directly infront of the beach.

we arrived in cartagena on august 24 and left the 27th. of 2011

had a blast touring the city.

if you want to save money simply exit the hotel and turn left walk down the street , cross the street and then walk to the next corner where you can catch a bus to downtown historical city for only $.75 cents each person
you can check out the old city then walk back to the hotel like we did. its 25mins walking distance from the museum of gold.

fresh coconuts can be had for $2 us

great place to have an ice cold beer is at the old castillo over looking the ocean and sunsets are incredible through all of cartagena especially our balcony at the hotel. (view picture)

we enjoyed alacarte restaurants every day we were their. the seafood on the 23rd floor is especially good and lets you see the whole city! the japanese restaurant in san pedro old town at the plaza is really nice as well. shuttles are provided and guided as well. we also had a very good baby beef steak at the steakhouse located in the hotel lowerlevel.

***please note that the only thing you may not like with the a lacarte dinners are that you may have to share your table with another couple**** but most of the time its harmless fun and a great way to meet other people from all over the world.

the animation team is extremely fun and motivating . we actually won the IDEAL COUPLE OF DECAMERON on our last night here . long long story but super fun if you are comfortable getting on stage with 200+ people enjoyinh themselves at your expense.lol

**the only thing i dislked of cartagena is a vendors all over the beach and infront of the hotel.*** the hotel is very strict about vendors crossing the line of the hotel and all you have to tell the vendor is no thank you , no gracias.

i cant knock them for making a living but what me and my husband did was ,we simply put everything they had for sale on us, we already had sunglasses, water shoes, towels from the hotel, watches etc and they wouldnt bother us anymore.

please look at the pictures posted with our review.

located right outside the hotel to the left once you exit are vendors that will sell you excursions to visit the old city of cartagena or isla rosario or baru island or chiva bus ride or party bus and whatever you like. the best guy to deal with is JUAN CARLOS, he is a skinny guy with medium dark complexion and straight foward with prices and 29 years of experience. his mom owns 2 horses and carriages. so whatever you need juan carlos is the man!

the water sports infront of the hotel are awesome and cheap. bannana boat for $6 a ride or a huge non fall ride for $7 us a ride with 5 minute duration (these cost me $35-45 us in aruba or punta cana and cancun. they also offer boogie boards for $5 us for 30mins. float on the water or catch some waves.

all in all i recommend this hotel and will be going back next year!

Room Tip: request a high floor room with you are a couple traveling with no kids.

I recently stayed in this hotel for a few nights in a family holiday. We had a 1 bedroom in the 17th floor with wonderful views of the ocean, the Old City and El Laguito. The room was great, however, the furniture was a little tired. I am not too picky so it was fine for me, but if you are looking for a high end experience this is not the place for you.

This hotel offers an all included experience with breakfast, lunch buffets and reservations for dinner in a choice of 4 restaurants. The hotel has lots of staff replenishing, mopping wet floors or simply being ready to help you. Domestic liquors are included as well so you can start having them from early in the morning. They offer additional snacks till late at night. All and all I would say it was a great experience, inexpensive and very satisfying.

I stayed at the Decameron with friends during their pre-wedding celebration. It was a truly horrible experience. The room my friend and I shared had mold and rust on the lamps, curtains, and mattresses. It was as if the room hadn't been cleaned or properly cared for in some time. The air conditioner vent even had a moldy smell. I didn't complain at the time because I didn't want to distract from my friends wedding and stress him about it, but I wish I had found a discreet way to do it. Because low and behold, we both ended it with severe bed bug bites. I suspect that they came from the extra blanket in the room which I DOUBT had been cleaned in a while. This experience was really sad as this resort has the potential to be really awesome. The views are amazing and very near the beaches. But overall it looks old and uncared for--stains on lounge sofas, badly repaired/repainted walls, etc. And the service leaves something to be desired. The food and beverage situation is heavily and inconventiently regulated.

As the side note, I think this property is mismanged. Decameron is a chain and I stayed at the resort in Santa Marta and it was like night and day. The Santa Marta resort, I had no problems and the staff was very helpful. Everything was clean and the place looked cared for.

The property is old. Rooms are simple but not bad, say 2-3 stars. There is no wifi connection in the room. Food is so and so, but I do not complain taking in consideration low price. The main problem is on the beach where there are no facilities to protect tourists from the sun and from the sellers. Every minute I was offered a massage. I had a line of Colombians trying to sel t-shirts, chains, hand-craft, oysters, icecreams, beers, etc... the result is that most of people find shelter in the sea-water! Yes, shelter from the heat and shelter from the sellers. At the end I decided to end my holidays a couple of days before in order to escape the nightmare.

Room Tip: Rooms are basic, but clean. Normally the view is ok.

Was part of a charter travel group of ~115 persons, arrived at ~10am ushered to Italian restaurant for breakfast while staff took passports and organised check-in, room keys, wrist bands and dinner reservation for first night.
Must make reservations for dinner at seafood, steak or Italian restaurant - couple must share table with other couple.
Fresh fruit and vegetables available for vegans - salads not premixed with ham, etc.
Staff were helpful and friendly - most spoke English - English language menus were available upon request - vegan meal for dinner was available at Seafood and Italian restaurants.
Property appears to be well-maintained and clean. Not much green space.
Basic room facilities - only shower head, no hand-held shower wand or lower tap. Walk with your own bath soap/gel, body lotion, facial tissue. Shampoo available in dispenser - 2 tiny soaps provided initially, not replenished thereafter. Adequate toilet paper.
Towels and bed linen were okay - did not smell dirty.
Was not aware of Spa, Gym or Jacuzzi. Hotel Info in room not in English.
Reception and restaurants not wheelchair or baby stroller friendly or accessible.
Central A/C - could be turned off via switch in bathroom.
Well organised/established tours - went on Cartagena and Santa Marta City Tours.
The beach is across the road, with crossing guard, however, many local hustlers selling drinks, massages, handicraft/Souvenirs. Felt safe though - locals trying to make an honest living.
Drinks lots of water - humidity at 100%

Room Tip: Room was on 19th Floor with Balcony, great city and ocean views, music could be heard from live show...

the hotel is not directly at the beach, you have to cross the street and the beach is a city beach, so not really nice..
the hotel is very crowded and has a lot of colombian tourist - so if you like it like the colombians do - you are gonna like it. but if you want to rest - like europeans want - don't go to this hotel.
