“A dream came true”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2010

Inicially I was a bit hesitant to stay in an chain hotel , though a luxury one. But it turned out that we couldn´t have made a better choice. The setting in the venerable Santa Clara convent at Plaza San Diego, facing the sea at the back side cannot be surpassed. You may want to sit all day and night in the patio and enjoy the tamed jungle and the gorgous vaults of the loggia. Don´t miss to have dinner there at the restaurant Refectorio. The French chef is am magicien. One may think it is easy to run a luxury hotel, where the guests pay double the rate of an ordinary good hotel, but they really do the extra bit to make your stay memorable. The staff tries to find out your wishes even before you realize you have them. Even in its category the Santa Clara is a rare find.

A fanstastic authentic hotel with four lovely restaurants. Looking at the other reviews, if one complains about mould in the room.

A great hotel. Great ambiance, both day & night, very good breakfast, and the location at the Santa Clara Plaza is the best in town. I found a night difficulties to sleep, sound isolation can be better, particularly for rooms in low floors facing the street and value can be better, but the location and the service are great and it is a beatiful building!. I will be back

The hotel is beautiful but the staff that greets you at the door is in costume, which is kind of kitchy. Also, when you call the concierge, the person answers the phone in French which is so tacky; it's in Latin America and they're trying to be fancy by not speaking in Spanish. So gaughe! There are security guards everywhere which make it less relaxing than it could be.
There's also a hotel on the Islas del Rosario which is beautiful too but the peddlers there, which are "official", are very annoying and one tried to sell me a cheap little bracelet, which I'd seen in the old town for about $10, for $200.
The food in both hotels is excellent, but looking back, I would've done the trip differently.
I recommend one of the cool boutique colonial places in the old town, they look much ore relaxed and less pretentious. The hotel owned by Santa Clara on the Islas del Rosario is definitely worth staying for a couple of days, but stay away from the "official" peddlers there and buy from the guys selling their stuff on the sidewalk in the old town, not the ones walking around, the ones with stationary stands.

Public areas charming but rooms (2) were both damp and 'fusty' smelling. I realise it must be difficult to maintain an ambient atmosphere in such an old building and high humidity but it was awful to get into a damp bed every night. Our rooms (305 &417) lacked sun at anytime of day so maybe this added to the problem.
Would we go back? Tricky because I think thsi hotels is by far the best in Cartagena - maybe the smaller boutique hotels can compete but we prefer somewhere more impersonnal.
Food, location and service excellent.
(Anyone thinking of using it as a wedding venue - do not hestitate; we saw the most splendid affair in what we presumes was the old chapel, absolutely fabulous attention to detail).

have stayed at the sofitel santa clara 4 or 5 times over past 3 years[most recent stay july 2010] and have always enjoyed my experience.....you dont come to cartegena for the beach but for the tropical weather and charm of the enclosed old city where the hotel is located...a unesco world heritage site
with about 160 rooms the hotel is not small but neither large....just perfect
the hotel has a charming garden courtyard where you can get drinks or eat breakfast....being part of the french sofitel chain you get great chocolate croissants...french breads ... cheeses....and a fantastic tropical breakfast....the house pet... a stunning colourful ''fruit loops'' toucan bird greets you every morning ...sometimes right on your breakfast table....the hotel pool is warm and large enough to do laps.... its also located in a charming courtyard....surrounded by most of the rooms....we always stay on the top floor where the balcony is open to the sky....room 509 512 have great views over pool and looking towards a bit of ocean....very romantic
and what about the negatives....the hotel is a converted monastary ...so old world charm can lead to small bathrooms.....the rooms could use ceiling fans for those who are not fans of continual a/c...,,,unless you want to stay in a small upscale boutique hotel with a dunk pool....this is the place for those who want the best of both worlds in the old city......p.s. if you want to eat with the local elites for dinner....try vittrola .. good fresh fish with fusion twist or club pescador.......the santa clara hotel is not for those seeking an all inclusive mass market hotel......sophisticated wealthy colombians are clientele along with north americans and europeans

We stayed in the Sofitel for our tenth anniversary. The staff was wonderful, very attentive and always pleasant. The toucans brought life to the beautiful courtyard. The atmosphere was charming and something you won't get from a typical Hilton.
