“great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

This was a very comfortable hotel in a great part of town, if you like history rather than beaches. Excellent service, but expensive. More facilities than other hotels (gym, pool, business centre, two restaurants, spa) and it is hot walking around, so we liked the services.

I have stayed in the Santa Clara several times over the past couple of years and it remains one of my favourite hotels and top recommendations. Although the price appears to have almost doubled since i first started staying here 3 years ago, it is worth every penny and really cannot be beaten.

From the moment you walk in, you will be impressed. The inner courtyard garden, convent setting, pool and service is amazing - you will be enchanted! Most rooms have now also been renovated so much more modern and light than previously. Nice and spacious with monsoon shower, posh (loto-colombia's l'occitane or molton brown),pillow tuck-down service (with free chcolate&bottle of water every night)

AMAZING breakfast too (best hotel breakfast and service i've found in colombia!) - lots of fresh fruit, pastries, pancakes, fizz at weekends!

The location in the walled town of cartagena cannot be beaten, with views of the sea too, the pool is brilliant (most boutique hotels have either a plunge pool or a little bigger but no room for relaxing around), service is excellent...

..all in all, expensive but luxurious and worth it..!

Probably the best hotel in Cartagena in a lovely old monastery building in a lively and interesting square. The inner courtyard is beautiful and, again, the best in Cartagena. Meals can be taken in one of the two restaurants in/around this courtyard. Huge swimming pool in the sea side courtyard is also excellent. Lots of staff around - sometimes they actually are there when you want them....they are not as attentive as they should so you are often left looking around for someone to help. They also seem to have a strange "waiting" heirarchy - those who carry from the kitchen - those who serve customers-those who get/serve wine etc etc.. This ends up with disjointed meals with wine half way through the main course. Food is OK although choices fairly limited.... Two horrors... Their "croque monsieur" is genuinely horrible - disgusting - and a disgrace for a French owned/managed hotel. The chef needs help. The greasy whipped butter is also horrible and they have no replacement. The food is expensive (as everywhere in Cartagena) but this is top end.... The highlight is the tame toucan who is extremely entertaining and very pretty indeed....The main issue is the rooms. Our first "superior" room had a bed which was damp and smelled of mould... After one night we complained. They offered a de-humidifier (a bit late really... would take a month to dry the bed!). We tried an alternative room - yet again, the same problem. They tried to tell me that it was hot and humid in Cartagena.. It is but I have lived in Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong which are even worse! These "superior" rooms are dull and soulless although big. The beds and furnishings are old. Damp, mouldy beds are just not acceptable. We were moved to a junior suite - very nice - new feel and not damp. Not sure we suffered the old room syndrome but this hotel should be used with caution until Sofitel sort it out. it also needs some better management. We had previously stayed at the Sofitel in Bogota - this place nowhere near it in terms of quality. Finally, the rip off prices of so-called "hotel taxis" are outrageous - 3 x the normal price but the same cars... Supposedly they are "approved" by the hotel.... Rubbish. other prices for trips; laundry etc are just a joke.

Room Tip: A suite or a renovated new room. Smell the mattress first! Old courtyard rooms are really nice and q...

It is considered the best hotel in Cartagena but as for Sofitel standards it is dissapointing. Still it is an old beautiful monastery. The main hall and the restaurants are amazing. The swimming pool is not bad. It is quite expensive for what if offers.
You can find tucans all over which makes your stay at Santa Clara more tropical.

The Santa Clara remains one of the best options in Cartagena, even with more competition from smaller boutique places. They have even upgraded many (all?) of the rooms quite significantly, though not completely.

The pool area is top notch.

Makes for a great stay in Cartagena.

The Santa Clara sofitel in cartagena is a beautiful old hotel in a former monastery. we discovered that there are 2 types of rooms. Renovated and NOT renovated. i would strongly suggest the renovated rooms. although not really in the style of the hotel, the renovated rooms are much nicer - new bathroom, new tv, new furnishings. all nice. the NON-renovated rooms are just ok - havent been touched in like 20 years. the bathrooms in both rooms are super small - like nyc hotel bathrooms, maybe smaller.but enough of the negative. the hotel itself is beautiful. beautiful pool area with plenty of seating. the staff too is really helpful. security at the hotel is really good without being intrusive. and the area in the old city of cartagena is perfect. easy walk to everything. overall great. i only wish that the hotel had a beautiful beach to go along with everything else. however, no hotels in cartagena are blessed with a beautiful beach. just doesnt exist in the town.

It is the best hotel in Cartagena. It has a very nice and pacific atmosphere. The rooms are very nice and comfortable the only problem is that you get all the noise from outside. The wifi isn´t good all around the hotel but it works perfectly well in the lobby. It has a friendly concierge staff and the lobby staff is great. The SPA is one of the best in Colombia. The gym is quite small. The hotel has a great location. The beds are great!

Room Tip: The suite is GREAT!!!!! rooms in front of the street are very noisy or in fron of the swimming pool.
