“In the heart of the Action”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

We spent 4 nights in a double private room. It was fantastic to be walking distance from bars, cafes, great restaurants and the old town. The staff are lovely and the owner is Genuine & easy going. It was really handy to be able to book tours and bus transfers from the hostel. At night the music was loud but thats to be expected for its location. Its great value for money.

We had a great experience at Mamallena. We stayed three nights at the front end of our trip and one night at the end. Our private room didn't have AC, but I didn't find that to be a problem with the fans. And yes, the bathrooms are small, but they do the trick! The pets were great, and I really appreciated the free coffee and breakfast in the morning. It's true that the music can be sort of loud at night, but I was usually up enjoying it so I didn't find that to be a problem. Overall, I'd say you get exactly what they advertise and exactly what you expect from a hostel. I also have to say that the price was incredibly competitive not just for Cartagena but for Colombia generally! As far as the trips and transportation from the hostel go, they are good for the convenience factor, but you can definitely find the same thing for cheaper if you're willing to look for it.

The highlight for me was the atmosphere. We spent several nights just hanging in the courtyard shooting the breeze with new friends. Maybe we were lucky to be there when there was a really great crowd, but I also think that part of it is that even though they have a bar, they aren't all up tight about you bringing in beers from the corner store, which makes folks want to chill in the courtyard which then gives the hostel an overall good, social vibe. It's a good model really, because not only do people end up enjoying your hostel but we definitely ordered our fair share of their delicious mojitos during my stay!

We do try our best and its good to hear when people appreciate that. Our idea has always been to try and make a place a bit like a shared house back home. You have all you friends to hangout with and the places, such as the kitchen, social area, TV room to do it in. But then theres also places to get away when you need your own quite time. I'm glad the format works for you, and most other people.

The World via Motorcycle (www.worldviamotorcycle) visited on 3 separate occasions and the atmosphere and rooms are just perfect. It’s not crazy party but there are always people having a drink here and there and they’re always so welcoming! The free breakfast is delicious (I always had like 4 waffles and 3 cups of coffee!) The wifi is strong and if you order from their restaurant you will not be disappointed. Damn good food their serving.

This is a great hostel for someone looking to use it as a home base – they facilitate all the fun touristy things to do in and around Cartagena and are always there to answer any questions. Want to do the mud volcano? Spend a day on playa blanca? Get over to Santa Marta or know where there’s a great local bar or club? Just ask them. They’re staffed by young folks with great advice.

Stuart is the owner, and he’s always around to answer questions or take care of any issues no matter how minor. He’s a great guy to have a beer with if he’s not busy he’ll swing by your table to chat.

Want a great hostel in Cartagena? This is where you want to stay.

I stayed here for five nights in early August and really enjoyed it. The owner is super nice and helpful as is the rest of the friendly staff. The kitchen was huge and well equipped if you wanted to cook and the restaurant also had great food. The dorms without AC had big ceiling fans so I actually was never too hot at night and the bathrooms were always clean. The only downside is that a few of the dorms are situated right above the bar next door so the music can be pretty loud until early hours of the morning, but the rooms elsewhere seemed to be pretty quiet.

We really enjoyed our stay at Mamallena. The staff were very welcoming, the room was clean and comfortable and it was well located near the historic centre. The food at the hostel was very good quality for the price & there were also plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance as well as street food stalls. The owner is usually around and is very knowledgable about the area as well as general advice regarding travelling in Colombia. We loved the courtyard set up, it had a great atmosphere and we found it a perfect balance in terms of being a good social area without being too noisy.. We never found it too loud at night even though our room faced directly onto the centre. It is hot at night but we found it ok in the double room with just a ceiling fan. The animals added a homely feel & the bar serves great cocktails.

Overall, it is a good budget place with free breakfast (pancakes), wifi, a helpful front desk and a decent kitchen. The courtyard is quite nice and quite social. The hostel is about a 10 minute walk from the walled city, a 10 minute walk to the fort, and there are many other hostels/hotels, stores and restaurants on the street. Their restaurant serves excellent pizza.
We stayed in a private room with a bathroom, which was quite nice, but the private room with no bathroom had mattresses and pillows that smelled like men's sweat (they don't seem to use washable mattress covers in Colombia). I would suggest asking them to check out the room.

The hostel is quaint and has a great sociable layout which is perfect for meeting people. It's not a crazy party hostel but its close to all local bars and clubs and restaurants. The hostel is perfect for pre drinking and the owner and staff are really friendly and helpful. You can organise any trip from the hostel and thy recommended us a good boat and captain for our sailing trip to panama. I would definately recommend this hostel. We came to this hostel even when we weren't staying here and later moved as soon as they had vacancies!
