We had the BEST time staying at Casa Marta with Marta and her two wonderful staff members, Yolei and Miguel. Marta is an incredible host and does everything she can to ensure that her guests have a comfortable stay and a wonderful time in the city of Cartagena.
The house itself is small, but cozy and has really unique features, like the small outdoor dipping pool and the open air kitchen and living room. The bedroom we stayed in was very spacious and extremely clean and the bathroom is spacious as well. The only small complaint that one might have about the bathroom is that there is never any hot water. However, in a place like Cartagena, it's hardly necessary and the luke warm water is actually a relief at the end of a hot day walking around the city. AC in the bedroom worked like a dream and there was also a small refrigerator in our bedroom to keep water, beer, etc. Overall, the accomodations were basic, but we never found ourselves lacking anything.
As far as service goes, it is far from basic. Marta and her staff go above and beyond to please you and assist you in every way possible. When we got there, Marta sat us down and went over all the different excursions and tours that are available in the city, and also recommended several places to eat. When we had questions about the City Sightseeing bus tour, she called the company up immediately and got all the details about the tour for us. Also, later in the evening, we spoke with her about our experiences traveling in other Latin American countries, and when we mentioned our love for papa rellena, she immediately asked her cook Miguel to prepare the dish for us at breakfast the next day.
Miguel's cooking, by the way, is wonderful. Throughout our stay, he prepared several traditional Colombian dishes for breakfast. For our last day, we asked if he could make us a special dinner, so he came out to the grocery store with us the next morning and found all the ingredients he needed for the meal, we purchased them, and he prepared us a delicious dish of fried fish and arroz con coco, with salad and fried plantains. It was outstanding! He also even made us a surprise dessert!
One night when we were looking for a place to go to eat, we asked for recommendations, and Marta's staff member Yolei recommended a place within walking distance. We didn't quite understand the directions the first time when they were given to us, so when we asked for them again, Yolei immediately got up and said she would take us there. Beyond that, Yolei washed our clothes for us with no extra charge, and was always there with a smile on her face to greet us at the door at any hour day or night.
Overall, the staff is exceptional and we walked away from our stay feeling like family. Thank you, Marta, Miguel and Yolei for showing us a wonderful time in Cartagena!
