“Do not stay anywhere else in Cartagena!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

We had the BEST time staying at Casa Marta with Marta and her two wonderful staff members, Yolei and Miguel. Marta is an incredible host and does everything she can to ensure that her guests have a comfortable stay and a wonderful time in the city of Cartagena.

The house itself is small, but cozy and has really unique features, like the small outdoor dipping pool and the open air kitchen and living room. The bedroom we stayed in was very spacious and extremely clean and the bathroom is spacious as well. The only small complaint that one might have about the bathroom is that there is never any hot water. However, in a place like Cartagena, it's hardly necessary and the luke warm water is actually a relief at the end of a hot day walking around the city. AC in the bedroom worked like a dream and there was also a small refrigerator in our bedroom to keep water, beer, etc. Overall, the accomodations were basic, but we never found ourselves lacking anything.

As far as service goes, it is far from basic. Marta and her staff go above and beyond to please you and assist you in every way possible. When we got there, Marta sat us down and went over all the different excursions and tours that are available in the city, and also recommended several places to eat. When we had questions about the City Sightseeing bus tour, she called the company up immediately and got all the details about the tour for us. Also, later in the evening, we spoke with her about our experiences traveling in other Latin American countries, and when we mentioned our love for papa rellena, she immediately asked her cook Miguel to prepare the dish for us at breakfast the next day.

Miguel's cooking, by the way, is wonderful. Throughout our stay, he prepared several traditional Colombian dishes for breakfast. For our last day, we asked if he could make us a special dinner, so he came out to the grocery store with us the next morning and found all the ingredients he needed for the meal, we purchased them, and he prepared us a delicious dish of fried fish and arroz con coco, with salad and fried plantains. It was outstanding! He also even made us a surprise dessert!

One night when we were looking for a place to go to eat, we asked for recommendations, and Marta's staff member Yolei recommended a place within walking distance. We didn't quite understand the directions the first time when they were given to us, so when we asked for them again, Yolei immediately got up and said she would take us there. Beyond that, Yolei washed our clothes for us with no extra charge, and was always there with a smile on her face to greet us at the door at any hour day or night.

Overall, the staff is exceptional and we walked away from our stay feeling like family. Thank you, Marta, Miguel and Yolei for showing us a wonderful time in Cartagena!

Casa Marta was the most hospitable and warm place we stayed throughout Colombia. We were two, but got a room with 2 single beds and one double bed. The room was beautifully done, clean and nothing to put a finger on. Marta is the best host you can imagine, making sure that you have all you need and more than that - she is like the latin mum you never had.
Breakfast was above normal standard, there was AC in the rooms and the location is within a short walk to the walled city centre. Would come back to Cartagena just to stay at Casa Marta again.

We had a very comfortable stay at Casa Marta. The room was very spacious, clean, and the AC was both powerful and quiet - such a relief to come back to after baking under the sun the entire day! The house is small but very cozy and artistically decorated. Marta and her staff very friendly. We were highly anticipating to receive fresh fruits for breakfast but on the first day we were given two pathetic bowls of watermelon (clearly leftover.) This was very disappointing, but after we asked if we could get papaya instead, Miguel went out and bought a papaya and man, it was mouth-watering delicious! The staff's flexibility and great service was a constant throughout our stay. Thank you, Miguel and Yoli! The location is outside the walled city but a short walk down Calle la Sierpe takes you to the walled city within minutes. In terms of places to eat around Casa Marta, Cafe de la Trinidad is okay (it's right across from Iglesia de la Trinidad.) We would definitely recommend a stay at Casa Marta!

Casa Marta has one thing no other lodging can boast - Marta. She is wonderful and so helpful! Her whole staff really bend over backward to make your visit to Cartagena great. The accomodation is basic - good beds, good AC, good shower and good simple breakfasts. The neighborhood is not inside the old city, but not far to walk there. Others have mentioned noise but we had nothing but quiet even though the room is on the street. Very pleasant stay and a lovely time in a FABULOUS town! Had some good eats at DiSilvio around the corner, and the little Mediterranean place on the corner had great cocktails, though we did not sample their food.

Out stay at Casa Marta was amazing. Superb location with everything in Cartagena within close proximity. Great rooms with AC and large showers. The house is beautiful and the pool is great for an afternoon dip. Marta and her staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. We were travelling around Colombia for 3 weeks, so needed some clothes washed before leaving Cartegena. It was done in 9 hours free of charge. I would come back to Casa Marta.

We've stayed at Casa Marta for 4 nights with our 1,5 years old boy.
The staff is great! They are very childfriendly, playing with our boy and watching him when we had to get something from our room. They also offer nanny-service they told us.
The room is a good size, working aircon, good shower and everything is clean. Our room was cleaned every day.
The location is okay, in the sense that you can walk to the old town easily and that the surrounding area is also nice to explore. Cartagena is not a big town, so everything is easy walkable.
The only downside of this property is what others also mentioned, the noise at night. The nearby plaza, church and street come alive at night with the noise of very loud music. We had good earplugs, but still it's a lot of noise. My husband and baby were sick during our trip in Cartagena and then it's especially uncomfortable when the night is so bad for a good sleep.

casa marta was wonderful. Marta and her staff are some of the nicest people I have encountered while traveling -- our first night, she sat with us, patiently explaining in a mix of Spanish and English where things were in Cartagena, using maps and photos. Breakfast every morning was freshly made -- a mix of a fruit of the day and a hot meal (arepas, eggs, chorizo, etc.) we stayed here for 4 nights, and the first thing Marta said to us was "mi casa es su casa" -- and she held up on that promise. We were in Cartagena for a wedding and Marta and her staff ironed all our dress wear free of charge, helped the girls find a local hair salon to get our hair done, and opened the door for us at 4am when we cam back after a wild and crazy party. The pool is perfect for a late night dip after being in the sweltering humidity of the city all day. I'm someone that's used to staying in hotels, but I would definitely return to casa Marta next time I'm in Cartagena.
