I really, really wanted to give this hotel a 5-star review because there are parts of it that certainly deserve it.
So here we go.
Somebody decided that they wanted to do a luxury hotel but somehow failed to think everything through because there are parts of this hotel that have no business using the word luxury.
Our first room was in the wing and had no windows, which was rather disappointing. We noticed that it wasn't getting cold and that the safe wasn't working. So we called a staff member to look into the safe situation. He said that the safe wasn't working and that we just had to deal with it. Also, he mentioned that the AC wasn't working properly (we were aware) and that he would have somebody look into it tomorrow because that staff member had already left for the day.
Our salvation turned out to be sewage. Yes, a burst [--] pipe got us out of there. We couldn't sleep that night because the room was muggy and stank badly.
So the next morning, we brought up the issue to the concierge who went into the room with us and we had a hard time convincing him that the stench was unbearable. There was no language difference - my husband is Colombian and very vocal. So finally, after a lengthy back and forth, the concierge agreed to move us to a different room. However, we had to wait almost 4 hours before this could happen.
The 2nd room was much better. It was in the main building, had a widow, and a working AC. It even had a balcony - alas with a barbwire view.
The courtyard/pool area:
Absolutely beautiful. It literally takes your breath away - especially at night. There are a lot of lounges, canopy beds, chairs, couches, etc in the are so you never lack space to spread out and enjoy the glorious sunshine and the breeze.
At night, everything is lit up with candles and is perfect for a romantic night.
Highly recommended as long as you stay away from salads. The food was great except my "arugula" salad which came with iceberg lettuce that the waiter claimed was arugula. Again, after a lengthy back and forth, the chef confessed that they didn't have arugula but never offered to remake the salad. But if you stick to steak and seafood, you will not be disappointed.
Very friendly but forgetful. If you want something extra or your order has multiple parts to it, the waiters will need to be reminded about it to point of getting nasty to finally receive what you want. But they will be forgetful with a smile and the obligatory "con mucho gusto" .
Horrendous. The house next door is apparently still under construction so you will hear deafening sawing, grinding and yelling sounds during the day. Also, for some reason, the neighbors insist on mowing their lawn with a weed whacker which takes forever, is very loud and makes the whole pace smell like gasoline. (I know this is not the hotel's fault but I don't think listening to noise for several hours a day is part of a luxury experience). Plus, you are in the middle of nowhere so you can't escape the noise.
The hotel has a free shuttle that will take you to Cartagena. However, this shuttle is also used to transport the staff, which in my experience always outnumbered the guests. So if a staff member got a seat on that shuttle and you want on it, well, you have to get a fairly expensive taxi.
So all in all, I'll say that I won't be back. When you cut so many corners and charge $350/night, you drive a hard bargain to be called paradise and luxurious.
