“Casa Canabal Hotel Boutique”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

I needed to spend one day in Cartagena last week and booked at the Casa Canabal on the recommendation of a friend. I was very pleasantly surprised by the unique qualities of this little hotel on a side street in Cartagena. Very accommodating staff, they even sent a driver to pick me up at the airport. I arrived early and they booked me right in. There are 2 beautiful little swimming pools, one on the roof. The rooms were spacious and very well appointed. The staff is very helpful for everything from recommendations for restaurants and giving directions. Even had someone come in to convert dollars to pesos.

I loved this hotel. The first floor room was spacious and stylish. Huge shower, stone floor. Breakfasts were perfect and the service welcoming. Ideal for a business trip or romantic holiday. The wooden doors opened off the lane, completely secure. Convenient for walking to the clock tower area in the old city, and easy to call a cab or get one for the main road on the corner.

Room Tip: First floor rooms are larger.

This hotel amazed us. Super comfortable beds, gorgeous roof, beautiful decor. The location was great, 5 minute walk to Old City. The street adorable and colorful. The food was delicious and staff super friendly and helpful. The rooftop pool was a great plus after a long hot day of walking around. We stayed inside the walls at a different hotel for one night at the same price and it did not compare. You get so much for your money at Casa Canabal! Will definitely recommend to anyone visiting Cartagena.

Room Tip: We switched from room 101 to 103 to avoid a little bit of noise in the lobby where they are constant...

Casa Canabal is the first place we stayed on our honeymoon. From the complimentary pick up at the airport to the daily sweet treats, we loved everything about it. Henry, the general manager, and his assistant are truly amazing people. They answered all of our questions, helped us make dinner reservations (b/c our Spanish is not great), booked daily excursions, but most importantly...we genuinely enjoyed getting to know them for the short time we were at Casa Canabal. The location of this hotel, Getsemani, is awesome with a lot of really cute bars/restaurants within very close walking distance. If you like salsa dancing, Cafe Havana is 2.5 blocks away. After traveling around Colombia for 2 weeks, we decided to stay at Casa Canabal our last night. Oh...did I mention that the beds and air conditioner are WONDERFUL!!!!!

My husband and I were in the middle of a longer birding trip in Colombia, and we spent 2 nights and 2 days in Cartagena at Casa Canabal. The only downsides were that the first floor rooms have no outside windows. (These are also the least expensive, and the ones you are most likely to get booking through inexpensive on line rates). Internet didn't extend into our room, although only 2 rooms separated us from the front desk area. We finally settled into using our computers in the lounge adjacent to the dining room, which was air conditioned. The hotel served us the best coffee I have ever had in my life, and I love excellent coffee! Breakfast was the best we had in any hotel in Colombia (during a 3.5 week trip). The staff were kind, courteous, and helpful. We loved the neighborhood, Getsemani, busy at night (so safe feeling), not very touristy. 10-15 min walk to the Old walled city...very touristy there. The staff at this hotel went out of their way to be helpful. They were amazing! Definitely would stay here again.

Room Tip: First floor rooms have no outside windows.

We stayed here twice during our trip to Colombia. I loved this place. Staff were friendly polite and helpful. The pools in the lobby and on the roof were lovely! Breakfast was great. The rooms are clean, comfortable and modern. They have everything you need. They even have a turn down every evening and leave you delicious little cakes or sweets! Lovely place in getsemani, I loved the location as it's where all the fun places are. Great hotel I would stay here again for sure. 3 minute walk to the walled city. Perfecto.

I am not sure if I can add anything new in regards to this property with all the compliments that it already received. My family (2 boys 7 & 10 y.o., my husband and I) stayed in a corner suite with two beds downstairs and one full size upstairs in a loft. We had to pay extra for the boys but there was really no way around that it Cartagena. After research for days, this was the best option for a family in and near the Walled City that did not leave us completely broke or stuff like a sardine in a room. There are plenty of places to eat and stores to stock up on water in the area. It's a short walk through interesting areas to get to the Walled City. There are also plenty of people walking around at night so it's very safe. The only thing I would say that could improve is the cleanliness of the wading pool upstairs. It was a bit murky. The breakfast was excellent as were the waiters. Ask for the stuffed arepas. The front desk staff were always incredibly helpful. Our price also included a pick up from the airport with a driver who spoke some English.
