“Beautiful property great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2012

I have stayed here twice. Both times were amazing. The rooms are super clean, well appointed and the staff is very attentive. It's perfectly situated inside the walled city. Camila will be more then helpful as well as the rest of the staff. Breakfast is delivered to your room at the time you wish it delivered. A very nice spread with more then you can consume. I wish I didn't post this because I would like to keep it all to myself. Swimming pool on the roof with a nice steam room and amazing views.

I wish I could have stayed at Casa Claver for more than 2 nights. The location is perfect - everything is in walking distance in Cartagena. The room is huge (kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom, laundry room) - I wish I could have moved in.

Casa Claver was a marvelous hotel to stay at.

For a few weeks, we were debating where to stay when we got to Cartagena. We finally settled on this hotel which offered more than enough for the price we were looking for of 200-300 USD a night. We were there for four days total and enjoyed every minute of it.

The hotel is smack dab in the middle of the city with all the major sights in the Historic District just a few steps away. We were 1 minute away from the popular Torre De Reloj and surrounding sights; and five minutes away from all the major cathedrals. When I tell you this was extremely convenient, I'm not lying.

As for the hotel stay, there were six to seven total rooms in the hotel. It was very quiet, small, and extremely secure. To enter the hotel you needed a disc key and the rooms had their own sets of locks and keys.

There was a pool (open 24 hours) on the upstairs roof with a beautiful view of one of the major Cathedrals in Cartagena. The surrounding areas of the pool were amazing as well.

The wait/cleaning staff of Viviana, Marta, Luis Carlos and a man by the name of Marco (he has glasses I believe) were all fabulous. They are all extremely helpful and can guide you in a bunch of different directions. Our property never felt safer.

The hotel has four floors and we stayed on the third. Our room was amazing. A long entranceway which along the way has a supplemental bathroom, washer and dryer (along with iron and ironing board). Then right before you enter your room, we had a beautiful kitchen to the left with all the works.

We then entered our room to a big hallway with a TV, perfect air conditioning (very important with the scorching heat in Cartagena), and a bunch of space. We also had sliding doors for more sunlight and air. The sliding doors were also right in front of our bed in the room with a view of the other floors of the hotel. When you look down, you can see the additional pool on the first floor.

If you leave the sliding doors open, noise is minimal. You can barely hear a peep except for horse carriages which usually don't parade across the city pass 1AM.

The main bathroom had the glass shower which was beautiful. I couldn't ask for more. The beds were very comfortable. I repeat, very comfortable. We almost didn't want to get out of them.

As for the General Manager, Camila was great. She will be your main point person for anything you need in the hotel aside from the wait staff. While she's usually not in the hotel (she always answers her cell when not around), there's always a staff member there to help you; even if you have to run around the four floor hotel a bit to find them.

What else?

The complimentary breakfast at any time you'd like was also a major plus. They deliver it to your room at any time as long as you tell them what works best for you. You can have an American style breakfast or a "Tipico" one which is more of the local cuisine. We loved the latter.

It is totally a hotel for independent travelers and a place for the traveler that doesn't need to be spoonfed. The main restaurant row in Cartagena is a block away to the left, and once you walk in the area for a few days, you get the hang of it.

What should you do?

A chiva bus will always be fun as it takes you to many major sights. Walking around the city and taking a day trip to "Playa Blanca" is also a great idea. Take the speed boat also known as "lancha rapida." It is 55,000 per person (27.00 USD per person) Colombian pesos and includes free lunch and a tarp above you to protect you from the sun for an extra 20,000 pesos (10.00 USD)

Eating at the local hole in the wall restaurants is much suggested. Barter prices with the street sellers as they are all negotiable. The horse carriage ride is about 35USD plus tip (total), but it is a fun experience as the driver tells you all about the sights you are passing by.

Definitely go to the Volcan De Totuma. I believe that is what it's called. It is a 2 hour bus ride by a safe tour company and you dip yourself in a volcanic mud. Cost for this is 30USD. It is amazing and hilarious at the same time. Make sure to bring at least 20- 30,000 Colombia Pesos (USD 15.00) as you will need to tip the people who massage you in the mud, and also clean the mud off of you. Bring Colombian pesos as these people have no means of exchanging USD anywhere.

The three major museums are all within steps of each other. You can knock them all out in total time of an hour. Make sure you make an additional stop at the Inquisition Museum.

In terms of spending money, I came with my girlfriend and we stayed for four days. We got free breakfast every morning so that was a deleted expense. I'd try to carry around 600,000-800,000 Colombian pesos for the whole trip. It is the equivalent of 300-400 USD. That's if you're eating at mom and pop shops (you can find them anywhere). If you choose fine dining, I suggest 1-1.2 million which is the equivalent of 500 USD to 700 USD.

In final, I highly recommend this hotel. If I came back to Cartagena, there would be no question I'd return here.

Thanks Camila and staff!

My husband and I stayed here for 1 week and had a brilliant time.Rooms are spacious and very comfortable and kept very clean. The roof top pool was our favorite place where we spend most of the time.
Room service breakfast was served by Vivian and Martha from the staff with no additional cost and Camille, the hotel manager booked for us in the best restaurants in walled city (btw try Don Juan Restaurant).
When I go back to Cartagena I'll make sure to stay here!

Casa Claver was recommended to us by a friend for our stay in Cartagena while on our honeymoon, and it was absolutely PERFECT! Camila is one of the sweetest people you'll ever meet, and is extremely helpful with anything that her guests need. English-speakers traveling to Colombia, it's a rare treat to have an English speaking person helping you with reservations and questions, as most people don't speak English. Camila even called in a favor w/ the manager to get us into La Vitrola when there were no reservations available.

The accommodations at Casa Claver are classy, clean, and modern, and everyone who works there is incredibly nice. Alex & Marta were so helpful... The rooftop pool is luxurious and so relaxing. Their in-room breakfasts are to-die-for and I think we could each their typical columbian breakfast for weeks!

We will definitely be back to Casa Claver, and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Cartagena. Thanks for everything, Camila, you're THE BEST!!

We arrived into Cartagena very late in the evening so there was no one at the front desk when we got to the hotel. A very nice man let us in and after telling him we had a reservation, we were then escorted to our room (more like apartment). The room was spectacular! A foyer / eating area, full kitchen, living room, washer/dryer and separate bedroom and bathroom. There was no TV in the living room, only bedroom, which we thought was a little odd but we didn't really need it; only to watch the news in the morning while having breakfast. Each morning they bring you either a traditional Colombian breakfast or American style breakfast. It is a great touch and nice to have it served in your room. The pool on the roof is very nice but small. It is definitely a small hotel so don't expect to have a bar area on the roof, or in the hotel, like some of the other places. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay. Great location and staff was friendly. We recommended our friends stay here two weeks later, which they did and had a wonderful time also!
