We docked in Cartagena and took a tour of the Old Town. Afterwards, the four of us went to La Langosta for lunch. Our tour guide walked us there from the heart of the Old Town because, as he said, “short walk, or $15 cab ride” and he was right. The restaurant itself is beautiful and well air-conditioned, which we welcomed as it was plenty hot and humid.
The restaurant is definitely not geared to norteamericano turistas as the menu was only available in Spanish, and the waiter did not speak English. Fortunately between our younger son’s several years of Spanish in school and my limited knowledge of menu Spanish we were able to plow forward. Despite the language barrier the service was excellent – maybe because we were one of the few patrons at that hour? We ordered two ceviches and a grilled brandy calamari as appetizers. The ceviches, though tasty and a decent appetizer-sized portion, looked and tasted identical, with the only difference being that small pieces of mango were added to the mango ceviche. The grilled brandy calamari, on the other hand, was very good, but the portion size was very small and disappointing.
Three of the four off us ordered lobsters. These are Caribbean lobster – no claws – so what you are basically getting is a lobster tail. They offer the lobster served with a variety of sauces such as mango, spicy, curry, etc. and they come beautifully presented, spit down the middle. However, you are basically paying about $45 for what amounts to a 6 ounce lobster tail with a small side of pale French fries. My elder son ordered a shrimp dish that came with some kind of rice and peppers and onions and the restaurant would be better off providing something like that as a side than an anemic fast food looking side of fries, especially at that price.
All told we went with high expectations of a wonderful meal and while the lobster tails were good, I have to say the ones specialty restaurants on the ship (Celebrity Equinox) have been way better. This is definitely NOT a restaurant to go to for lunch, and would not be at the top of my list for a return visit for dinner when looking at a price/performance return, as the meal cost $225 US for the four of us.
