We had to find out what this mud volcano was all about. We booked a tour with a hostel, I think one central agency runs the tours as they went around picking people up from various hotels. We went in the afternoon.
The bus took us straight to the volcano, we were already in our swimwear and we advanced up the volcano to the mudpit at the top from where you can see the near-by lagoon.
Here you have an option of a massage some of the locals. My partner and I got the massage (most people in the group did). It cost an extra 3000 per person. They lay you down in the mud and it´s a quick massage, (they even cover your face and hair! eyes avoided of course) but it is still relaxing and a great sensation of being suspended in the mud. If you dont get a massage, you won´t get to lay in the mud as there isn´t enough space, unless it´s not a busy day then you could. The guys were professional and not creepy at all, but if you don´t like other people touching you just opt out of the massage.
You also have the option of giving your camera to a guy to take photos of you whilst in the mud, this is 3000 as well. It is a great thing to do so you can have some reminders of this crazy time.
Next you go to the lagoon to rinse off. Here there are some ladies to help you wash, again for 3000. At first my partner and I refused their assistance, but as we waded into the foot deep lagoon, it just didn´t get deeper. Plus the bottom of the lagoon is all mushy and muddy.
So we asked for their help. They were really good. They come with their bowls and tip water over you, helping to get pud out of your ears, hair etc. She took my bikini to wash (whilst I knelt in the water - just enough to cover) adn washed myself.
From the boys they demand your boardies (or swimmers) so they can wash them for you whilst you guys wash...errr your guys. It would be impossible to clean off without them and their little bowls so budget for this. They aren´t rough or man-handle at all. We read this in some other reviews and thats what made us decline in the first place.
After the wash you can change if you want before getting back on the bus back to town. A lot of fun and worth doing! Where else will you do this? Just budget for the optional stuff, especially the wash, its essential! Plus it is a job for these local people and it´s only a few dollars in the end.
