Cali was not recommended to us but we were curious and needed a stopover en route Medellin from the south. It is a bit gritty and there are undercurrents of danger in some places but there is also a nice vibe in some places. When we arrived we were greeted by an friendly, elderly woman who we later learned was the mother-in-law of the owner. She was very helpful and informed us of the best places to go out and advised us on safety issues. There were hardly any other guests when we were there (Easter weekend 2011) so we had full use of a very well equipped kitchen (fridge stocked full of beers too), the use of a great lounge area with DVDs to watch and a roof terrace. There are hammocks for chilling out in too. A great place and very friendly staff. Oh, and down the road, is literally the best Italian restaurant I have ever been to.
